  9. File-Ex adds file management functions like Find, Copy, Delete, 
  10. Rename, and MakeDir to the Open and Save dialogs of Windows
  11. applications automatically. File-Ex also enlarges file dialogs
  12. to any size desired, adds Recent and Favorite file/folder lists,
  13. and allows long file names to be used with 16-bit applications.

  16. If you have just installed File-Ex and are reading this from 
  17. the Notepad program, try it out now by selecting File from the 
  18. menu, then Open.  You should see buttons and the 'Recent...' 
  19. and 'Favorite...' lists at the bottom of the Open dialog,
  20. and the dialog should be larger to allow more files to be listed.
  21. (The default is still fairly small -- it can be as large as the 
  22. screen if you like.)

  24. If you need help, click the 'File-Ex' button, and then the 
  25. Help button from that dialog.  
  26.  
  27. File-Ex runs as a taskbar tray icon in Windows 95 -- you should
  28. see a small File-Ex icon at the far right of the taskbar.  Right-
  29. click on this for the main menu, or double-click on it to bring
  30. up a dialog with configuration, help, & option functions.

  36.                     SOME IMPORTANT NOTES
  37.  
  38. There will be cases where File-Ex causes problems with a dialog,
  39. particularly in the placement of special controls added by an 
  40. application, due to File-Ex resizing and enhancing the dialog.
  41. Such issues are unavoidable due to the wide variety of program
  42. designs, but there is a way to work around most problems.
  43.  
  44. To fix this (and other problems, including possible fatal errors),
  45. you should be familiar with disabling File-Ex functions for specific
  46. application dialogs.  Please refer to the Help file for details.
  47.  
  48. ** Users of Logitech Mouseware (versions prior to 7.5), HackIt!, 
  49. NetMedic and Excite Direct:  These programs have a bug which disables 
  50. File-Ex if they are executed after File-Ex loads.  To fix this, you can
  51. either use the delayer program (see the "Troubleshooting" section
  52. of the Help file), or enable a special "watchdog" function in File-Ex
  53. so that it will re-enable itself.  The watchdog is especially useful 
  54. for the Logitech Mouseware problem, since it disables more than once.
  55. To enable the watchdog, add this line to FILEEX.INI:
  56.  
  57. Install Debug Hook=1
  58.  
  59. Unfortunately, there are side effects to this function.  Some other
  60. programs will cause lock-ups if this hook is installed, so if you
  61. experience problems after setting this, then you should remove the
  62. INI file line above and use the Delayer program instead.  (Or, upgrade
  63. the offending program to fix the bug -- Logitech version 7.5 fixes it,
  64. the NetMedic current version is fixed, and the others should have 
  65. patches by now.)

  68. ** MS Office 97 users (Word, Excel, Access): While these programs have
  69. similar functions to File-Ex, we have pre-trained File-Ex for them
  70. so that their use is consistent with other programs.  If you prefer
  71. the original/standard dialogs, you may easily configure File-Ex to
  72. not replace the original dialogs.  Go to "Configure Applications..."
  73. and select the appropriate dialog entry, and click "Edit".  Then
  74. check the radio button "Add File-Ex button" and uncheck the boxes
  75. for "Initially hide original" and "Automatically Open/Close File-Ex".

  82. Our freeware program "Delayer" is also included with this package.

  84. While Delayer can be used for other purposes as you like, it was
  85. included here to combat a problem caused by some programs that
  86. prevent File-Ex from working.  This problem happens when some 
  87. other programs (such as Excite's "Direct" program) run after or
  88. at the same time as File-Ex, typically during Windows start-up.
  89.

  91. notes about using Delayer.

  97. ** Important note for upgrading from the Windows 3.1 version **
  98.  
  99. The File-Ex Setup routine will not overwrite a FILEEX.DAT file
  100. if it already exists in the program directory -- this is to avoid
  101. erasing your trained applications when upgrading.
  102.  
  103. However, if you used the Windows 3.1 version and install the Win95
  104. version in the same directory, this will prevent the new FILEEX.DAT
  105. file from being installed.  Applications trained in Windows 3.1
  106. will not be recognized in Windows 95, so this is a problem.
  107.  
  108. To avoid the problem, either delete the old FILEEX.DAT file before
  109. installing the Win95 version, or install the Win95 version to a
  110. new directory.
  111.  
  112. (Note: It is not necessarily recommended to do a Complete Removal 
  113. of the old File-Ex, since this will also delete file histories and 
  114. configuration preferences.)

  183. If you're not familiar with File-Ex, please read the
  184. 'Overview' section in the Help file after installation.

  187. To install File-Ex, run SETUP.EXE from Windows:

  189. 1. From the Start Menu, select Run...
  190.  
  191. 2. In the Command Line box, type d:\path\SETUP, where 'd' is 
  192.    the letter of the drive and 'path' is the directory where 
  193.    the File-Ex files are.

  196.      C:\FILEEX\SETUP

  198. 3. Follow the instructions that appear on the screen.

  200. 4. After File-Ex installation is complete, it will need to 
  201.    validate some files.  This will happen automatically the 
  202.    first time File-Ex is invoked, so you don't need to do 
  203.    anything special for this to happen.

  205. 5. If you're not familiar with File-Ex, open the Help file 
  206.    and read through the Overview sections.

  209. Technical information on installation
  210. -------------------------------------
  211. The installation procedure does the following:
  212.  Copy appropriate files to the Program and Data directories.
  213.  Add a File-Ex group with appropriate icons.
  214.  Add File-Ex to the startup group.
  215.  Verify that the operations succeeded.
  216.  Run File-Ex if requested.
  217.  Run notepad to display the readme.txt file if requested.
  218.  
  219. When File-Ex is actually invoked for the first time (through a
  220. File/Open or File/Save command, or by automatically loading 
  221. File-Ex), it validates the information files (fileex.hlp, 
  222. readme.txt, order.txt).  This ensures that File-Ex cannot be 
  223. modified and re-distributed with different company contact/order
  224. information.

  227. What files should be where, after installation

  229. These files should be in your File-Ex program directory :

  246. The file FILEEX.DAT will be copied to the 'Data' directory.  
  247. (This is usually the same as your Program directory, but may 
  248. be different, for instance, in a network environment where the 
  249. Program directory is shared.  The FILEEX.DAT file should be in
  250. a place not shared by users, similar to INI files.)

  252. These files are not copied anywhere, and are not needed by 
  253. File-Ex after setup:

  258. The files COMMEX.INI and FILEEX.INI will be created by the 
  259. Setup program, and will be placed in the Windows directory.

  261. The file FILEEX.LOG will be created in the Windows directory, 
  262. and is useful for troubleshooting.  If everything works after 
  263. installation, this may be deleted.

  267. About the Evaluation Period
  268. ---------------------------

  270. File-Ex is distributed as a shareware trial version.  This 
  271. means that you are free to try it out for 30 days. It will 
  272. be fully functional during that time, so you can try all of 
  273. its functions.
  274.  
  275. After using it for 30 days (not necessarily calendar days, but
  276. when it's been used on 30 different days), some of the functions
  277. will be unavailable.  You will still be able to use the file 
  278. management functions like Copy and Delete, but the recent/favorite
  279. functions, dialog sizing, and some other features will not be 
  280. available unless you register (purchase) the program.

  283. Giving Copies to Friends -- (Please Do!)
  284. ----------------------------------------

  286. Shareware works best when you 'share' it with other people!  If
  287. you like this program, we would appreciate it if you spread it 
  288. around.  Give copies to friends and co-workers, or even upload 
  289. it to your favorite BBS.

  291. Please only distribute the original compressed (.ZIP) file that 
  292. you received File-Ex in.  This is the only way to have the 
  293. complete file set needed to install File-Ex, since the File-Ex 
  294. directory after installation does not contain all of the 
  295. necessary installation files.

  297.   Note: If this is a purchased copy, please DON'T distribute 
  298.   it!  The registered copy contains your registration key file,
  299.   and giving this to someone else is illegal.  Please only 
  300.   distribute the shareware trial version!

  351. Troubleshooting
  352. ---------------

  354. Please see the Help file for complete information, but here
  355. are some important notes about programs that File-Ex will
  356. not work with:
  357.  
  358. File-Ex does not cooperate well with some other programs that 
  359. do the same thing (modify the file dialogs).  If you have these,
  360. then you should disable them when running File-Ex.  These include:
  361.  - Instant File Access (don't load it at the same time)
  362.  - Long File Names (some reported problems, but usually works)
  363.  - LFNs Now (don't load it at the same time)
  364.  - Norton File Assist / LFN Enabler (disable it from the desktop options)
  365.  - Q.E.D. (can't co-exist with File-Ex since it changes the common dialogs)
  366.  - FileNotes (can't co-exist with File-Ex since it changes the common dialogs)
  367.  
  368. AutoCAD R12 can't handle long file names, even with File-Ex's help.
  369. Apparently it doesn't accept the short-name aliases because of the
  370. tilde ('~') character.
  371.  
  372. Corel Office 7 apps (Word Perfect, Quattro Pro, etc.) have some trouble 
  373. even when trained.  For best results, configure for "Add Button", optionally 
  374. with "Automatically Open..." selected.  They will not operate properly
  375. if the "Initially Hide" option is selected, or if configured for "Replace".

  377. If a 16-bit program forces the file name into lower case, then it
  378. cannot use long filenames.  (One known case is Codewright's Save dialog.)
  379.

  390. If you encounter insurmountable problems, or just don't like 
  391. the new functions that File-Ex provides, you may need to 
  392. un-install it.

  395. is installed in your File-Ex program group.  Please see the
