  9. BACKUP AND RESTORE
  10. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
  11. These utilities work together. Backup will copy your esential files into the 
  12. Backup folder. Restore will copy them back again.

  15. TO LOAD RESTORE & BACKUP TO YOUR HARD DISK
  16. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

  18. Simply click on the Install icon and follow the prompts. The default folder 
  19. for backup and restore is C:\Backup. If you already have a folder of this 
  20. name on your C drive you will be prompted to select another name for the 
  21. folder.

  23. Version 2.1 has the ability to locate your windows95 folder, I haven't been
  24. able to test this as mine is set to the default C:\windows 
  25.

  27. REGISTERING BACKUP
  28. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
  29. I have included a small nag screen asking you to register the program. The 
  30. registration number is free. All you have to do is e-mail, or snail mail me
  31. with your name and I will send you the registration number by return. This 
  32. will remove the nag.

  35. FILES LOADED TO YOUR HARD DISK
  36. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
  37. The following files will be loaded to your hard drive in 
  38. the BACKUP folder.
  39.     Install.exe
  40.     Backup.exe
  41.     Restore.bat
  42.     readme.txt
  43.     Delete.com
  44.     Short cut to Backup and Restore on your desktop (optional)
  45.     Shortcut to backup in your startup program, so that backup is run
  46.     every time you boot up (optional)
  47.     Shortcut to Backup and restore in the program manager.

  50. The following files will automatically be copied to the Backup folder
  51.  
  52.     autoexec.bat
  53.     config.sys
  54.     win.ini
  55.     system.ini
  56.     system.dat
  57.     user.dat.

  60. I suggest that you use Backup before loading any new programs. Some programs
  61. add additional lines to your Autoexec, config, win.ini or system ini files,
  62. or adds data to the system registry. Should the new program cause your 
  63. machine not to run under Windows 95 you can restore it to its former glory
  64. with ease.

  67. RESTORE
  68. ~~~~~~~
  69. This program does exactly what it says, it restores the copied files back to 
  70. the windows folder.

  73. IMPORTANT NOTE
  74. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
  75. Restore.bat is designed to detect your windows folder, and it works fine when
  76. it is set to the default c:\windows. If your windows folder is different, 
  77. ie c:\win95 and reset refuses to copy files, edit restore,bat and change the
  78. second line from

  80.     set direct=%windirect%
  81.  
  82.      to set direct=your windows folder path  with % at each end
  83.

  85. TO RESTORE FILES WHILST RUNNING WINDOWS 95

  87. If you know which files are causing the problems select the appropriate files
  88. if not select ALL FILES (Option F).If restoring the Systen and User.dat files
  89. windows must be re-booted to have the changes take effect.

  92. IF WINDOWS95 WONT RUN

  94. Boot up as normal, but when the STARTING WINDOWS 95 message appears, press F8
  95. and select COMMAND PROMPT from the DOS prompt type the following commands:

  98. cd\backup (or yor chosen folder name)
  99. restore

  101. If you have loaded backup onto another drive start the above by changing to 
  102. that drive,eg if it is on the D Drive the commands will be:
  103. d:
  104. cd\
  105. cd\backup (or yor chosen folder name)
  106. restore

  109. Select the option you want. I suggest option F - all files
  110.  
  111. When the restore program is complete, type WIN at the command prompt.

  114. TO UNINSTALL BACKUP
  115. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
  116. Simply click on the Unistall icon in the Backup folder in the program files.
  117. Due to the way the uninstall part works, a folder called UNINST BACKUP on your
  118. C Drive. Once unistallation is complete, this folder can be safely deleted from 
  119. the drive.
