  7. QUICK START
  8.  
  9. * Double click the æExcalibur.exeÆ icon to start the game.

  13. SETUP PRGOGAM
  14.  
  15. * This PC version of EXCALIBUR 2555AD uses a 'Setup' program where you
  16.   can configure the game to run as well as possible on your PC.
  17. * Depending on specification of your computer, not all of the different
  18.   options will be available to you.
  19. * When the game starts for the first time it will automatically select
  20.   the best options for your PC. You should avoid changing these unless
  21.   you really want to...

  23. - 3D MODE -
  24.  
  25.   * This option allows you to select which 3D mode to run the game in.
  26.     The options are:-
  27.  
  28.     * FISH 3D 8 BIT : Suitable for all PC users.
  29.     * D3D SOFTWARE  : This will give you better quality graphics,
  30.               but will only work well on fast MMX 
  31.               processors.
  32.     * 3DFX MODE     : This provides the highest quality graphics,
  33.               but is only available to users with 3Dfx
  34.               accelerator cards.
  35.  
  36. - LOGIC SPEED -
  37.  
  38.   * This option changes the Frame Rate Independence. It is designed to
  39.     allow the game to run faster on slower PCs.
  40.  
  41.     * 1 - 5 : This is the number of logical game cycles for every
  42.           graphics cycle. The higher the number, the more
  43.           jerky the game will be.
  44.     * Auto  : This mode will select the best FRI for each room you
  45.           enter. In theory it should work the best...
  46.  
  47. - ENHANCED LIGHTING -
  48.  
  49.   * This feature allows you to change the quality of the in-game
  50.     lighting by changing the sub-division on the polygons. This feature
  51.     should only really be used in high spec machines.
  52.  
  53.     * Off        : This should be used on most machines.
  54.     * Silly High : This will slow the game down dramatically, but
  55.                one day machines may be fast enough to use it...
  56.  
  57. - RESOLUTION -
  58.  
  59.   * This option determines what resolution the game will run in. Not
  60.     all graphics cards will support all resolutions. As a general rule
  61.     the lower the resolution, the faster the game will run.
  62.   * In 3Dfx MODE the game will only run in 640x480.

  66. GAME CONTROLS

  68. - MENU CONTROLS -

  70.   * Cursor Up    : Move the menu highlight up
  71.   * Cursor Down  : Move the menu highlight down
  72.   * Space Bar    : Select the highlighted menu option
  73.   * Escape       : Return to the previous/main menu

  75. - STANDARD CONTROLS -

  77.   * Cursor Keys  : Walk forwards, backwards, rotate left and right
  78.   * Space Bar    : Interact - Talk, pickup objects, etc.
  79.   * Shift        : Run - Hold down in conjunction with the cursor keys
  80.   * Alt          : Use - Beth will use the active item in her Inventory
  81.   * Ctrl         : Fight mode - Press to enter and leave fight mode

  89.   * Press CTRL to enter fight mode. Hold down CTRL and the relevant
  90.     CURSOR KEY to perform the following moves...

  93.   * Ctrl + Left  : Back-handed slice
  94.   * Ctrl + Right : Fore-handed slice
  95.   * Ctrl + Up    : Overhead slice/chop

  97.   * Press CTRL or SHIFT to leave fight mode.

  101. THE INVENTORY

  103. * The inventory screen is split into 4 main sections. Clockwise, from
  104.   the top left corner, these are The Items Box, The Map Box,
  105.   The Spell Book and The Combination Box. The active section is shown
  106.   by a coloured border. To switch between the different sections of the
  107.   screen press the SHIFT or TAB Key.

  109. - THE ITEMS BOX -
  110.  
  111.   * Cursor Keys  : Scroll between the available items
  112.   * Alt Key      : Make the selected item 'active' (It will rotate)
  113.   * Space Bar    : Place the selected item in the Combination Box
  114.   * Ctrl Key     : Remove the selected item from the Combination Box
  115.  
  116.   * The bar at the bottom shows which item is currently selected
  117.  
  118. - THE MAP BOX -
  119.  
  120.   * Cursor Keys  : Scroll the map
  121.   * F3 Key       : Zoom the map in
  122.   * F2 Key       : Zoom the map out
  123.  
  124. - THE SPELL BOOK -
  125.  
  126.   * Cursor Keys  : Up and Down will scroll through your known spells
  127.  
  128. - THE COMBINATION BOX -
  129.  
  130.   * It is possible to combine two items together to form a new one.
  131.     When you place two objects from The Items Box into The Combination
  132.     Box they will automatically be combined to produce a new object.
  133.     Press the SPACE Bar to move the new object to The Items Box.
  134.     If a new object is not created, then the items you have selected
  135.     cannot be combined together.

  139. JOYSTICK SUPPORT
  140.  
  141. * Excalibur 2555AD also now includes support for 4 button joypads. This
  142.   is achieved by using part of DirectX. Therefore DirectX 5 must be
  143.   installed on your computer for this to work.
  144. * Due to time constraints, the joystick support has not been completely
  145.   tested. As it was never part of the original design, any joystick
  146.   support should be considered a bonus...

  151. 3DFX USERS
  152.  
  153. * Excalibur 2555AD was written to use the latest version the 3Dfx API -
  154.   'Glide'. You may need to update the drivers for your card before you
  155.   can play Excalibur.
  156. * If you run the 'Setup' program and there is no 3Dfx option in the 
  157.   3D MODE section (and you have a 3Dfx card) try the following:-
  158.  
  159.     * Open the folder '3DFX' on the root of the CD.
  160.     * Inside it there is a program called 'g24rtvg.exe'.
  161.     * Double-click on this file to update your drivers.
  162.  
  163. * This program is supplied by 3Dfx Interactive and as such we accept no
  164.   liability for what might happen. It should work fine though...

  168. SCREEN SIZE
  169.  
  170. * An additional feature was added to the game at the last minute which
  171.   allows you to resize your screen in the FISH 3D & D3D SOFTWARE modes.
  172. * When you are in game, pressing F5 will shrink the screen. This will
  173.   have the advantage of allowing the game to run much faster.
  174. * Pressing F6 will enlarge the screen again.
  175. * There are a number of known problems with this feature:-
  176.  
  177.     * The Pause menu may be slightly corrupted.
  178.     * Objects in the Inventory may be shown incorrectly.

  182. CAMERAS

  184. * To switch between the normal and 'other' camera, use the F2 Key.
  185. * Whilst in the 'other' camera view, use the F3 Key to Zoom in and out

  189. ALT-TAB

  191. * Pressing ALT-TAB during the game to switch to another program may
  192.   cause problems. Both your Energy Bar & Map may become corrupted when
  193.   you return to the game.
  194. * The best solution to this problem is not to press ALT-TAB.
