Information for Site Owners

If you are a website owner, the following information will be of interest to you.

What is Webaroo?

Webaroo is a free software service that gives users the power to search and browse the web ~ anywhere, anytime, without a connection. It is a new kind of index/search tool that brings substantial and previously unavailable exposure to websites. Webaroo's advanced technology enables users to search web content offline on their laptop, PDA or smart phones. To learn more about Webaroo's technology click here.

Webaroo servers crawl the web, analyze web pages and automatically select the subset of pages with the greatest diversity and quality in the least storage size. These pages are then packaged into topic-specific "web packs" that can be downloaded by users onto their devices. Once downloaded, users can search and browse that content offline.

How often will Webaroo crawler access my pages?

The Webaroo crawler (user-agent: WebarooBot) periodically crawls the web. It does not access any website more than once every few seconds. It does not make more than one connection per IP address.

How does Webaroo decide which pages to include in "web packs"?

Webaroo uses automated technology to select the subset of pages that maximize Content Density i.e. the most content value in the least storage size. Webaroo determines the content value based on the diversity and quality of the pages. The more diverse the set of pages, the more queries it is likely to be able to answer. The higher the quality of pages, the more likely they are to contain meaningful information for the user.

How does a user access my web content in Webaroo?

Once the user downloads pre-created web packs onto their mobile device they can access content using WebarooΓÇÖs search engine. Search results are ranked based on relevance. Each search result includes not just a link to the cached page for offline use but also a link to the live page, so the user can access the latest version of the web page if they have a live Internet connection.

Are my web pages modified in any way?

No. Webaroo does not modify web pages. Each page will look exactly the same as it did at the time of the crawl. Webaroo displays a header at the top of every page indicating it is a cached copy of the page, with a link to the live page.

How do I include my website in Webaroo?

The process of creating web packs is automated. We do not control the subset of web pages that will be included in a Web Pack.

You can, however, make sure that your website is visited by our crawler. If you think your web site is not being crawled by Webaroo and would like it to be, please submit your URL via email.

Removing a part of the site:

To exclude a specific directory (for example, subdir), add the following text to your Robots.txt file:

User-Agent: WebarooBot
Disallow: /subdir

Our bot will first obey the first record of User-agent starting with "WebarooBot". If no such entry exists, it will obey the first record of User-agent starting with "*".

Removing a specific page:

To remove a page from all search engines, insert the following meta-tag in the
section of your page:

If you believe your request is urgent and cannot wait until the next time Webaroo crawls your site, please send us an email request with web page and web pack details for urgent removal at noarchive@webaroo.com. Before processing their request, webmasters would be requested to insert the "noarchive" meta-tag into the page's HTML code.

Removing a page urgently:

Remember, the above changes to robots.txt and html meta-tags will take time to be reflected in Webaroo. They will take effect during the next Webaroo crawl. If your request is more urgent, please email us in addition to taking the above steps.

By extracting and caching the best subset of the web, Webaroo makes the web portable. It puts the best of the web content in your pocket and gives you the freedom to use the web offline.
-->

Webaroo Technology

Webaroo has assembled a world-class team of computer scientists and engineers to develop the best possible offline web technology. There are two critical components at the core of Webaroo technology. One is a system designed to maximize Content Density (tm). The other is our Smart Caching (tm) technology.

Content Density

Webaroo servers crawl the web, analyze the web pages and select the subset of pages that maximize Content Density i.e. the most content value in the least storage size. Webaroo determines the content value based on the diversity and quality of the pages. The more diverse the set of pages, the more queries it is likely to be able to answer. The more high quality the pages, the more likely they are to contain meaningful information for the user.

Take an analogy from the print world. If there was only one book you had to take on a road-trip, that could answer almost any query you may have, it would most likely be the encyclopedia. In other words, the encyclopedia has high content density.

The content density software can be run on the whole web, or on parts of the web (say, the sports web). The selected subset of pages is packaged into a “web pack”. A web pack is, quite simply, a collection of web pages, along with other meta-data that enables caching, search, updates and more.

Smart Caching

Webaroo users have client software installed on their laptops or mobile devices. The Webaroo client is smart about caching and updating the content on its local storage. Users can download selected web packs from Webaroo servers. Users can also download favorite web sites. Users can search this content anytime, anywhere, without a web connection.

When the user connects the mobile device to the Internet, the client checks with the server to see if there are any available updates. Different web packs may update at different frequencies depending on the nature of content (e.g. news changes more frequently than, say, restaurant reviews). These updates may be incremental i.e. broken into smaller chunks and downloaded over a period of time. The updates are also interruptible i.e. if the user disconnects in a hurry and later re-connects, the update will continue from where it left off.
