  3. This is the README.TXT file distributed with Icon
  4. Manager version 3.4a.
  5.  
  6. OVERVIEW
  7. --------
  8. Icon Manager is a powerful tool for working with
  9. icons in the Windows operating environment.  The
  10. same drag-and-drop interface used by Program Manager
  11. allows icons to easily be moved, copied, and organ-
  12. ized into files within Icon Manager.  Unlike other
  13. applications which offer awkward procedures for
  14. installing icons into Program Manager, Icon Manager
  15. will install icons into Program Manager or Norton
  16. Desktop DIRECTLY using the wizardry of Windows'
  17. Dynamic Data Exchange.  For those who would like
  18. to create or edit their own icons, Icon Manager
  19. taps the power of OLE to whisk you into a edit
  20. session with Paintbrush by just double-clicking on
  21. an icon.  All of these features and more make
  22. Icon Manager the most complete icon tool available
  23. for the Windows operating environment.

  26. REGISTRATION
  27. ------------
  28. Icon Manager is not free software.  It is released
  29. as shareware, which provides the opportunity for
  30. the program to be evaluated before it is purchased.
  31.  
  32. We hope that after you try Icon Manager you will
  33. like it so much that you will want to register.
  34. By doing so you are voting with your pocketbook for
  35. us to continue developing high-quality, Windows
  36. shareware.

  39. is included in the REGISTER.TXT file.

  42. DOCUMENTATION
  43. -------------
  44. Icon Manager includes on-line help that covers all
  45. aspects of program operation.  Some customers have
  46. asked why Icon Manager does not come with an oper-
  47. ations manual.  The main reason for this is that
  48. since the first release of Icon Manager in 1990,
  49. Impact Software has never asked registered users
  50. for an upgrade fee.  New versions that users
  51. acquire from their shareware channel continue to
  52. honor earlier registrations.  By including on-line
  53. help with each release, we are able to provide up-
  54. to-date information for new and old customers
  55. alike.
  56.  
  57. This is not intended to suggest that upgrades
  58. will always be free, but rather that this method
  59. of providing documentation makes it easier for
  60. us to provide no-charge updates when possible.
  61.  
  62.  
  63. INSTALLING ICON MANAGER
  64. -----------------------
  65. The Icon Manager package includes a graphical Windows
  66. installation program using the standard name of SETUP.EXE.
  67. You should place all of the files included in the package
  68. on a floppy disk or in a temporary directory of your hard
  69. drive.
  70.  
  71. SETUP requires about 210K bytes of hard disk space to
  72. complete the installation of Icon Manager.
  73.  
  74. Run SETUP by selecting the 'Run...' command from the
  75. File menu of Program Manager or File Manager. Enter
  76. "d:\SETUP" as the Command Line, where "d" is the
  77. drive/directory that you are installing Icon Manager FROM
  78. (i.e. A:\SETUP).
  79.  
  80. SETUP will prompt for the target directory you would like
  81. to install Icon Manager to on your hard disk.  Accept the
  82. default or enter a directory of your choice.  Select OK
  83. to install Icon Manager.

  85. UPDATES IN THE 3.4a RELEASE OF ICON MANAGER
  86. -------------------------------------------
  87. Version 3.a is a maintenance release provided
  88. to correct minor problems reported since the
  89. release of version 3.4.
  90.  
  91. Specifically, the following items have
  92. been corrected:
  93.  
  94.   - A GPF would occur when dragging an icon
  95.     into the display port of the Tool
  96.     Window.
  97.  
  98.   - The light and dark grays would swap
  99.     when an ICA (archive) file was saved
  100.     in an ICL (library) file format.
  101.  
  102.   - The "Select All" command would GPF
  103.     when used on a file that contained an
  104.     exact multiple of 32 icons.

  106.  
  107. NEW FEATURES IN THE 3.4 RELEASE OF ICON MANAGER
  108. -----------------------------------------------
  109.  
  110. The following additions and changes have been added in
  111. the 3.4 release of Icon Manager:
  112.  
  113.   - The program has been generally updated to
  114.     make it a more solid application when
  115.     it encounters unknown or bad data, and
  116.     to provide feedback to the user to indicate
  117.     the source of the problem.
  118.  
  119.   - The Status bar now displays the progress
  120.     while sorting (aligning) icons and the
  121.     progress of multiple icon moves or copies.
  122.  
  123.   - A Most Recent Used (MRU) file list has
  124.     been added to the File menu.  The last
  125.     four files that are opened or saved will
  126.     be available at the end of the File menu
  127.     for quick access.
  128.  
  129.   - Sometimes the icon Arrange commands would
  130.     cause an error in version 3.3.  This has
  131.     been corrected.
  132.  
  133.   - The overall presentation of the program
  134.     has been updated with the buttonface
  135.     texture and 3D dialog look.

  138. NEW FEATURES IN THE 3.3 RELEASE OF ICON MANAGER
  139. -----------------------------------------------
  140.  
  141. The following additions and changes have been added in
  142. the 3.3 release of Icon Manager:
  143.  
  144.   - A bug in the "Install Icon" routine would
  145.     sometimes not quite complete the installation
  146.     of an icon into a Program Item for a
  147.     non-Windows application.  This has been
  148.     corrected - icons should install faithfully
  149.     100% of the time.
  150.  
  151.   - Icon Manager has been "fortified" (smile) to
  152.     handle larger volumes of icons than ever before.
  153.     As a result, we have successfully opened the
  154.     more than 4,000 icons contained in the ALLICON
  155.     collection IN ONE WINDOW!  The performance of
  156.     this code is only limited by the available
  157.     memory and temporary disk space on your system.
  158.  
  159.   - Multiple icons may now be selected for a copy or
  160.     move operation.  Depress the SHIFT key while
  161.     selecting icons with the mouse to create a group
  162.     selection.  The Edit menu also contains a new
  163.     entry, "Select All," for quick selection of all
  164.     icons in a window.
  165.  
  166.   - A status bar has been added to Icon Manager that
  167.     displays the filename of the active window, along
  168.     with a count of the total number of icons in the
  169.     window and the number of icons currently
  170.     selected in the window.

  173. NEW FEATURES IN THE 3.2 RELEASE OF ICON MANAGER
  174. -----------------------------------------------
  175.  
  176. The following additions and changes have been added in
  177. the 3.2 release of Icon Manager:
  178.  
  179.   - Icons can now be replaced within Windows program
  180.     files.  Just drag the new icon you would like to
  181.     use over the one you want to replace and drop it!
  182.  
  183.   - The Arrange option on the Window menu now
  184.     cascades to reveal two selections.  Select Align
  185.     Only to perform a normal row and column
  186.     arrangement.  Select Alphabetize to perform an
  187.     alphabetical sort during the arrange.

  190. NEW FEATURES IN THE 3.1 RELEASE OF ICON MANAGER
  191. -----------------------------------------------
  192.  
  193. The following additions and changes have been added in
  194. the 3.1 release of Icon Manager:
  195.  
  196.   - Icon Archive files now store a description for an
  197.     icon.  If you open earlier versions of archive files
  198.     the descriptions will be "(Untitled)".  Icon Manager
  199.     will read old format icon archives.  Their "changed"
  200.     flag will be automatically set when they are opened.
  201.     When you select to save them they will be written in
  202.     the new format.
  203.  
  204.     (Version 3.1a allows icon descriptions to be used in
  205.     icon library files as well.)
  206.  
  207.   - Icon windows act more like Program Manager's.  There
  208.     is a "current selection" for each window.  The icon
  209.     description will be highlighted in archive windows.
  210.     All other windows display a dotted frame around the
  211.     current selection.  Use the mouse or keyboard arrow
  212.     keys to move the icon selection.
  213.  
  214.   - The right mouse button can be clicked on any icon to
  215.     display a popup menu of actions that can be performed
  216.     on the icon.
  217.  
  218.   - Icons can now be edited via an OLE session with
  219.     Windows Paintbrush by double-clicking on them.
  220.  
  221.   - Icons can be installed *directly* into Program Manager
  222.     using the Install Icon function.  A supporting *.ICO
  223.     file is created to be used by Program Manager when (if)
  224.     your video display format changes.  The Reconcile
  225.     Configuration function can be used at any time to cause
  226.     Icon Manager to look for ICO files it created which are
  227.     no longer in use by Program Manager.
  228.  
  229.   - Icon Manager takes advantage of the sound capabilities
  230.     of Windows 3.1.  Select the File.Sound menu option to
  231.     configure your audio preferences.  If you have the
  232.     hardware to play digital *.WAV sounds, you can request
  233.     sound effects associated with the drag and drop as
  234.     well as deletion operations on icons.

  246.  SOFTWARE LICENSE
  247.  
  248.  Non-licensed users are granted a limited license to use Icon
  249.  Manager on a 30-day trial basis for the purpose of determining
  250.  whether Icon Manager is suitable for their needs.  The use
  251.  of Icon Manager, except for the initial 30-day trial,
  252.  requires registration.  The use of unlicensed copies of Icon
  253.  Manager, outside of the initial 30-day trial, by any person,
  254.  business, corporation, government agency or any other entity is
  255.  strictly prohibited.
  256.  
  257.  A single user license permits a user to use Icon Manager
  258.  only on a single computer.  Licensed users may use the
  259.  program on different computers, as long as there is NO
  260.  POSSIBILITY of it being used at one location while it is
  261.  being used at another, or on a computer network by more than
  262.  one user at a time.
  263.  
  264.  No one may modify or patch the Icon Manager executable files
  265.  in any way, including but not limited to decompiling,
  266.  disassembling, or otherwise reverse engineering the program.
  267.  
  268.  A limited license is granted to copy and distribute Icon Manager
  269.  only for the trial use of others, subject to the above
  270.  limitations, and also the following:
  271.  
  272.   1)    Icon Manager and all of its release files must be copied
  273.         in unmodified form, complete with the file containing
  274.         this license information.
  275.  
  276.   2)    No fee, charge, or other compensation may be requested or
  277.         accepted, except as authorized below:
  278.  
  279.         A) Operators of electronic bulletin board systems (sysops)
  280.            may make Icon Manager available for downloading only as
  281.            long as the above conditions are met.  An overall or
  282.            time-dependent charge for the use of the bulletin board
  283.            system is permitted as long as there is not a specific
  284.            charge for the download of Icon Manager.
  285.  
  286.         B) Vendors of user-supported or shareware software approved by
  287.            the ASP may distribute Icon Manager, subject to the
  288.            above conditions, without specific permission.  Non-
  289.            approved vendors may distribute Icon Manager only after
  290.            obtaining written permission from Impact Software.
  291.            Such permission is usually granted.  Please write for
  292.            details (enclose your catalog).
  293.  
  294.         C) Non-profit user groups may distribute copies of the
  295.            Icon Manager diskette to their members, subject to
  296.            the above conditions, without specific permission.
  297.            Non-profit groups may collect a disk duplication fee
  298.            not to exceed five dollars.
  299.  
  300.   LIMITED WARRANTY
  301.  
  302.   Impact Software warrants that all disks provided are
  303.   free from defects in material and workmanship, assuming
  304.   normal use, for a period of 90 days from the date of
  305.   purchase.
  306.  
  307.   Impact Software warrants that the program will perform
  308.   in substantial compliance with the documentation supplied
  309.   with the software product.  If a significant defect in
  310.   the product is found, the Purchaser may return the
  311.   product for a refund.  In no event will such a refund
  312.   exceed the purchase price of the product.
  313.  
  314.   EXCEPT AS PROVIDED ABOVE, IMPACT SOFTWARE DISCLAIMS ALL
  315.   WARRANTIES, EITHER EXPRESS OR IMPLIED, INCLUDING, BUT NOT
  316.   LIMITED TO IMPLIED WARRANTIES OF MERCHANTABILITY AND
  317.   FITNESS FOR A PARTICULAR PURPOSE, WITH RESPECT TO THE
  318.   PRODUCT.  SHOULD THE PROGRAM PROVE DEFECTIVE, THE
  319.   PURCHASER ASSUMES THE RISK OF PAYING THE ENTIRE COST OF
  320.   ALL NECESSARY SERVICING, REPAIR, OR CORRECTION AND ANY
  321.   INCIDENTAL OR CONSEQUENTIAL DAMAGES.  IN NO EVENT WILL
  322.   IMPACT SOFTWARE BE LIABLE FOR ANY DAMAGES WHATSOEVER
  323.   (INCLUDING WITHOUT LIMITATION DAMAGES FOR LOSS OF
  324.   BUSINESS PROFITS, BUSINESS INTERRUPTION, LOSS OF BUSINESS
  325.   INFORMATION AND THE LIKE) ARISING OUT OF THE USE OR THE
  326.   INABILITY TO USE THIS PRODUCT EVEN IF IMPACT SOFTWARE
  327.   HAS BEEN ADVISED OF THE POSSIBILITY OF SUCH DAMAGES.

  329.   Use of this product for any period of time constitutes
  330.   your acceptance of this agreement and subjects you to its
  331.   contents.

  333.   U.S. GOVERNMENT RESTRICTED RIGHTS
  334.  
  335.   Use, duplication, or disclosure by the Government is subject
  336.   to restrictions as set forth in subdivision (b)(3)(ii) of
  337.   the Rights in Technical Data and Computer Software clause at
