  9. The directory you created for the Dilbert Screen Saver Sampler

  25. When you run the sampler the following files will be created in 
  26. the Windows directory:

  38.  
  39. The Dilbert Sampler does not make changes to any of your .INI 
  40. files or to your AUTOEXEC.BAT or CONFIG.SYS files.  It should be
  41. very easy to cleanly remove the sampler when you upgrade to the
  42. full-featured screen saver.
  43.  
  44. To remove the Dilbert Sampler:
  45.  
  46. a.  Ensure that the Dilbert Sampler is not running.  (Shut the
  47.     program down and delete any icons in the Program Manager.)
  48. b.  From Windows File Manager (or from DOS) delete the directory
  49.     containing DILBERT.EXE.
  50. c.  From Windows File Manager (or from DOS), delete DELRSAMP.INI
  51.     from the Windows directory.
  52.

  54. [NOTES]
  55.  
  56. 1.  To create the sampler, the following features have been 
  57.     disabled or removed from the full-featured Dilbert Screen 
  58.     Saver:
  59.  
  60.     "Add" Option:
  61.        No modules can be added to the Dilbert Sampler
  62.  
  63.     "Remove" Option:
  64.        No Modules can be removed from the Dilbert Sampler
  65.  
  66.     No templates are supplied
  67.  
  68. 2.  The Dilbert Sampler ships with the same Help as Intermission.
  69.     So, don't be alarmed if you find Help documentation for 
  70.     features which don't exist in the Sampler (such as the 
  71.     disabled functions). 
  72.  
  73. 3.  The screen saver delay that is set in Windows' Control Panel
  74.     will take precedence over the one set in Intermission.  If 
  75.     you have Intermission set to time out in 30 minutes, but your
  76.     screen saver comes on after two minutes, you should disable
  77.     the Windows Screen Saver (i.e., set to none).  
  78.  
  79. 4.  The Dilbert Screen Saver is a sound-capable multimedia product.
  80.     Sound will run through an installed sound card or through the
  81.     internal speakers of your computer if either driver has been
  82.     installed.
  83.  
  84.     You can check to see if either driver has been installed by
  85.     looking in the Control Panel in the Main Group of your
  86.     Windows Program Manager.  
  87.  
  88.     To hear sound in Intermission modules, you need to:
  89.  
  90.        a.  Have a sound card and the appropriate drivers, or a 
  91.            PC Speaker Driver installed.
  92.  
  93.        b.  Make sure the volume is set in the Intermission 
  94.            Options dialog box and for your sound card.
  95.  
  96.     NOTE:  Remember, that PC speaker drivers (which use your PC's
  97.            built-in speaker) may cause your machine to pause when 
  98.            sounds are being played.  The wait cursor will freeze.
  99.            The sound quality will be marginal. For sound driver 
  100.            installation instructions, refer to your Windows 
  101.            documentation.
  102.  
  103.     If you don't have a sound driver installed, the internal 
  104.     speaker driver can be downloaded from the Delrina forum under
  105.     the Consumer Software Division section on Compuserve. 
  106.  
  107.     From America Online, you can download the speaker driver 
  108.     file from the PC Music and Sound Forum Library. The filename 
  109.     is SPEAK.EXE. (Keyword: PC Music)
  110.  
  111. 5.  The Dilbert Sampler is not designed to run while other screen
  112.     savers are running and vice versa.  This includes Intermission
  113.     4.0, 3.0, 2.0 and Screenpeace.  The sampler will only run the 
  114.     supplied screen saver modules.
  115.  
  116. 6.  If you use a compressed hard drive (using Stacker or 
  117.     DoubleSpace, or another disk compression utility), some ASA 
  118.     modules will take longer to load than they would from an 
  119.     uncompressed drive.  This occurs once at the beginning of the
  120.     animation, when the entire file is loaded into memory.  The 
  121.     actual performance of the animation does not suffer.
  122.  
  123. 7.  The configuration dialog of some modules includes a check 
  124.     box to "Skip Songs".  This option only applies to those 
  125.     modules that include MIDI sounds.  Since none of the sampler
  126.     modules use MIDI this box has no effect. 
  127.  
  128. 8.  Some Intermission ASA modules may require up to three 
  129.     megabytes of free memory in order to play the animation.
  130.     Should you not have the required free memory, you will see a
  131.     message indicating that there is a problem loading the module.
  132.  
  133. 9.  Notes on using Intermission with Delrina's WinFax Pro.
  134.  
  135.     Because the Dilbert Sampler does not have an Install program,
  136.     automatic recognition of the Winfax Pro COM port is not
  137.     supported by the sampler.  
  138.  
  139.     Intermission 5.0 and the full-featured Dilbert ARE able to
  140.     recognize and intelligently monitor the COM port that WinFax
  141.     Pro is using to enable error free faxing!
  142.  
  143.     If you have been avoiding screen savers until now because 
  144.     they tend to bounce your incoming faxes, check out Delrina's
  145.     full-featured screen savers!
  146.  
  147.     By default, Intermission monitors the COM ports in your 
  148.     system for activity and will blank your screen instead of 
  149.     running modules if it detects communications activity.  COM 
  150.     port checking can be individually enabled by including the 
  151.     line "COMx=0" in your ANTSW.INI file (found in your Windows 
  152.     subdirectory) under the "[Intermission]" heading.  For 
  153.     example "COM1=0" would enable COM port checking for COM1. You 
  154.     must restart Intermission to update the settings.  
  155.  
  156.     If the switch COMx=0 is found in the ANTSW.INI file, the 
  157.     following occurs when you are running Delrina WinFax: 
  158.  
  159.     a.  At Intermission startup, Intermission tries to find WinFax.
  160.  
  161.     b.  If Intermission cannot locate WinFax, it tries a second 
  162.         time after 15 seconds (in case both programs are in the 
  163.         StartUp group), and Intermission loads first.
  164.  
  165.     c.  If Intermission is still unable to locate WinFax, it will 
  166.         try each time the saver is invoked. When WinFax is found, 
  167.         Intermission just blanks the screen the FIRST time. This 
  168.         is to make sure that we aren't blanking in the middle of
  169.         a Fax transmission.
  170.  
  171.     d.  If a WinFax Receive or Transmit happens while Intermission
  172.         is blanked, Intermission flashes the message sprite 
  173.         "! Faxing" in the upper left corner of the screen.  This 
  174.         is followed by a "! wake up" sprite.  This sprite is also 
  175.         used to tell you how many e-mail and FAX messages you have
  176.         received while the screen saver module has been running.
  177.  
  178.     e.  If Intermission activates while a Fax transmission is 
  179.         happening, it will just turn your screen blank.
  180.  
  181. 10. Cirrus Logic video cards:  Users of Cirrus Logic video cards,
  182.     running the Cirrus Logic drivers, could experience problems 
  183.     with the Dilbert Sampler. You can check to see whether you 
  184.     are running the Cirrus Logic drivers by checking the Windows 
  185.     Setup area in the Main Group.  If the Display reads "CL <code
  186.     number>", then you are running the Cirrus Logic drivers.  
  187.     You can avoid driver-related errors you may be having by 
  188.     changing to the Windows VGA or Super VGA driver.
  189.  
  190. 11. Odd Colors:  The configuration dialog for "animation" modules 
  191.     also includes check boxes to "Optimize for 16 Colors" and to 
  192.     "Use Real Colors (VGA)".  These options are only applicable
  193.     if your video drivers or hardware use a palette that differs 
  194.     from the standard Windows VGA palette (most 3rd party video 
  195.     drivers do).  Intermission will default to using the correct 
  196.     palette settings in most cases.  However, some drivers will 
  197.     cause the animation to color incorrectly.  In that case, 
  198.     checking "Optimize for 16 Colors" forces Intermission to use 
  199.     the correct palette.  "Use Real Colors (VGA)" should only be
  200.     checked when you are using the standard Windows video drivers
  201.  
  202.     a.  VGA, 
  203.     b.  VGA 3.0, or 
  204.     c.  Super VGA 800 x 600, 16 colors.
  205.  
  206.     Some video cards will alter the standard palette settings.
  207.     Checking "Use Real Colors (VGA)" will correct that problem. 
  208.  
  209. 12. 8514A Video Driver:  If you are using 8514A video drivers, and
  210.     experience painting problems with ASA modules the problem 
  211.     should be corrected if you check the "Optimize For 16 Colors" 
  212.     check box in the module configuration dialogs.
  213.  
  214. 13. Black screen:  If the Dilbert Sampler turns the screen black
  215.     instead of running a module, uncheck the Monitor CPU Activity 
  216.     option in the general section of the Options Dialog Box. This
  217.     should provide a work-around for the problem.
  218.  
  219. 14. Random screen trails during animation:  If the characters 
  220.     leave black lines or traces of themselves during the animation
  221.     process, place a check mark in the "Optimize for 16 Color" 
  222.     checkbox.  This checkbox is located in the "Configure" dialog.

  230. a.  Unzip the DBSAMPLE.EXE file as instructed in the 
  231.     INSTRUCT.TXT file supplied.
  232. b.  Run Intermission 5.0.
