CompuServe Troubleshooter helps you interpret the error messages you may occasionally encounter in CompuServe programs. This program gives you the opportunity to find out the underlying causes of an error message and help you to fix it. The information in the program was compiled by Technical Support Representatives who troubleshoot these programs daily.. I gathered information about many common error message to provide you with your own personal Technical Support Specialist.
After launching Troubleshooter you will be presented with the error message screen. First, choose the program you are using from the list. Then choose the error message you are getting. Text boxes describing possible causes and solutions for this error will then come up.
Most error messages can be the result of several different circumstances, requiring multiple steps to correct the situation. After reading the possible causes, follow the list of steps that will cover all the possible scenarios. Many of these steps require you to modify the modem settings in the CompuServe software. Since the some of modem commands vary from modem to modem, I made sure that they were only a click away. Just click on the modem button and you will be able to lookup the exact modem that you have. On the modem screen, choose the modem brand from the list and then the model. You will see commands for setting important modem settings such as flow control, data compression, error correction, and locking the baud rate. Not all commands are different for different modems. If you need help with some basic commands that are universal, you can click on the question mark button that says "More info on modem commands." If you have a purchased a computer from a national vendor and do not know what the modem is that is in the computer, you can look up that information by clicking on the Vendor icon at the top of the screen.
The Troubleshooter is a good place to start when you have problems, but you may still need to contact Customer Service. If you have problems with a specific piece of software you can find support forums online that deal with that program. These are the best places for technical assistance. If you don't know how to get to the forum you use the GO CIM command for a list of support forums staffed by CompuServe Technical Support Specialists who will answer your questions within 24 hours. If your question is of a more general nature, send a feedback message by using the GO FEEDBACK command. A feedback representative will send you a response via email within 48 hours. If you are having trouble connecting to CompuServe you can reach Customer Service 8 a.m. to 12 a.m. EST Monday through Friday and 12 p.m. to 10 p.m. EST on weekends. If your modem is not on the list, send a feedback message and we'll add it to our database.
