With art by the master artist Alfredo Alcalla, this comic book was produced with the cooperation and support of the Apollo 12 astronauts Charles "Pete" Gordon (Ret.), Captain Richard Gordon (Ret.) and Captain Alan Bean USN (Ret.). The comic book was written by D.C. Agle, senior writer on "One Giant Leap," NASA's 25th Anniversary commemorative of the moon landing. The comic book's artistic style is reminiscent of the old-style super-hero type of art work, and draws the reader to realistic settings that make Pete Conrad's adventures come to life.
"Moonshot, the Flight of Apollo 12" is an historically accurate, educational comic book that contains a glossary of space terms, technical notes on the Apollo spacecraft and interviews with a lunar geologist and the three Apollo 12 astronauts.
Pete Conrad used the medium of comics to reach out to children and describe the thrill and wonder of real-life adventures and science fiction that became a reality. Conrad, a former Navy test pilot, went into space four times. Initially, he flew with the Gemini Program. His amazing accomplishments include walking on the moon and commanding the first Skylab space station.
Conrad has said of his decision to tell his story in a comic book, "Every astronaut has/is/or will soon be writing the same story about the same old stuff intended for the same old audience. But a comic book, that's different! It could really make a difference in a young person's life."
The comic book is carried by the Smithsonian, Space Center Houston, Kansas Cosmosphere, science and air museums nationwide, and of course, CompuServe's Comics/Animation Forum.
