- WinSTon V0.2r2 - Windows Atari ST Emulation
- -----------------------------------------
-
- Welcome to WinSTon, an Atari ST emulator for your PC. This 'readme' will quickly explain
- the basics of WinSTon; for more information simply bring up the help file included.
-
- To run WinSTon you will need an Atari ST TOS image. This is the ST's operating system
- and comes in a number of versions. WinSTon is compatible with all major releases
- of TOS.
-
- When WinSTon is first run, if you have not installed a previous version, it will ask you
- to select a suitable TOS image. Use the 'browse' button to select the image and click on OK.
- The emulator will now boot to the familiar green desktop.
- If you do not have a TOS image you can download one from 'The Little Green Desktop', see the
- end of this file for the web address. I would suggest using TOS 1.00 for games as
- this seems to provide most compatibility.
-
- The emulator uses two basic keys - F11 and F12.
- F12 toggles between Windows and ST mouse mode. While in Windows mouse mode any mouse
- movement moves the familiar mouse around the screen. By pressing F12 this re-directs the
- mouse to the emulator screen, moving the ST mouse around.
- F11 will toggle between Windows and full-screen mode. To run in full-screen mode you will need
- DirectX(available from Microsoft) installed on your system.
- WinSTon can now select the full screen display from a number of DirectX modes available. These
- are split into 16 colour/Hi-Colour and Low/High resolution. You will only be shown the modes
- which your graphics card and DirectX can support, so if your DirectX drivers are not capable
- of Hi-Colour then only the 16 colour options will be available. The options shown in the
- dialog screen are in order of speed(fastest at the top). So a 16 colour display will have the
- fastest update but no in-game colour effects will be seen. To see these colours you must
- select one of the Hi-Colour options.
- We also have Low/High resolution. When in Low resolution WinSTon will pick the nearest
- DirectX mode to display the screen for a faster frame rate. As some games constantly flick
- between resolutions during play you will notice that DirectX will keep selecting a new
- resolution. This can be annoying for the user and so the High resolution option has been
- included. With this option selected just one DirectX mode will be used and this gives a more
- solid display.
- We also have the interlaced feature. This has two advantages - it is faster and it also helps
- to remove the 'chunky' pixel look of the PC 320x200 resolution. With the interlace option
- selected WinSTon will only draw to alternate lines of the screen when using a High resolution
- DirectX display mode. If this display is not to your taste simply de-select the option,
- although you will notice a performance penalty when doing this.
- Try out all the modes available to you and select the one which most suits your needs - you may
- notice different results on different machines as WinSTon will select the most suitable
- display modes it can(ie an overscan mode may not be available)
-
- ( For more information on features, disc images, joystick controls and sound see the help
- file, available from the Windows 'Start' menu or from the directory where WinSTon was
- installed. You can also press F1 while running WinSTon in Windows mouse mode )
-
- Major fixes/information/notes
- 1. Much faster emulation(sometimes as much as twice over previous versions)
- 2. Much improved sound. No sample support yet(Sorry, next version).
- 3. Fixed full screen display bug(incorrect colours).
- 4. All major territory TOS versions should now run OK, complete with floppy/hard-drive access.
- 5. Alt/Ctrl/F10 keys now mapped correctly.
- 6. Smoother mouse movement.
- 7. Much better MFP emulation. Colour effects etc... are much more stable. Expect to see Spectrum
- 512 pictures working in the next version!
- 8. Selectable overscan modes. You can now disable the borders when running full-screen.
- 9. 'Always ask before Reset' toggle. With this disabled the emulator will reset each time you
- put a new disc image in floppy drive A. (You can hold SHIFT when you click the Floppy A icon
- to alternate modes)
- 10. Auto scale for Low resolution. Doubles the size of a low resolution screen while running in
- a Window(speed depends on your graphics card performance).
- 11. Sync display with Video card option. Many menu scrollers appear 'jerky' in normal mode. This
- is due to PC monitor refresh rates not being 50Hz, as on the original ST. This option forces
- the emulator to sync with the monitor(usually 60-70Hz). Scrollers will appear smoother, but
- as the emulator is running faster sound/controls may not work correctly. This option was
- added simply to make reading scrolling messages easier on the eyes!
- 12. While in 'Cursor Joystick Emulation' mode you can hold any Shift key to revert the cursor
- keys back to their original function.
- 13. Window position is stored into the registry.
- 14. Many more bugs fixed.
- 15. If you find any problems which you think should be reported please e-mail them to me or
- put them on the WinSTon BBS (a link can be found on the WinSTon HomePage).
- Please, please, please check the Help file before you do, as your query may already be
- answered in there!
- 16. DO NOT ask me for any TOS roms!
-
-
- Future additions(major new version expected in New Year 2000)
- 1. Better FDC emulation(about half of the games which are yet to run correctly are due to this)
- 2. Sound sample support.
- 3. Improve general emulation, so even more software will run.
- 3. Debug saving of games. Also add option to 'snap-shot' whole memory.
- 4. Correct key mapping for foreign keyboard layouts.
- 5. RS-232 NULL Modem connection to allow PC to PC and PC to ST communication.
- 6. Internet option for RS-232.
- 7. Add 50Hz and 60Hz speeds
- 8. Support Spec512 colours
- 9. Tree structure for favourites.
- 10. Document of games/application which run on WinSTon(out soon).
- 11. Version of WinSTon with full debugger.
- 12. Faster/Extended resolutions for GEM applications, eg 800x600 and 1024x768
- 13. Hardware scrolling emulation(for Enchanted Lands)
- 14. Save/Create blank .MSA files
- 15. And much, much more!
-
-
- Have fun!
