  46. WebCopier is a powerful offline browser that downloads Web sites and 
  47. stores them locally. It gives you instant access to critical Web sites 
  48. at any time, regardless of where you are. WebCopier performs precise 
  49. links searching, including JavaScript parsing, it can download up to 100 
  50. files simultaneously and print entire Web site or only specific part of 
  51. it. WebCopier supports proxy servers, allows to specify account name 
  52. and password to access secure Web sites. Advanced features include 
  53. website preview, SSL (HTTPS) support, Agent Identification, scheduler, 
  54. templates, Url and file filters, wizards, ability to resume download, 
  55. dialer, Shockwave files support, different language modules.

  62. To install WebCopier:

  64. - If you have downloaded file named "wcopier.exe", just run it. 
  65. - If the file name has extension ".zip", you need to decompress it 
  66.   with a program such as WinZip.  Then run the file "setup.exe".

  108. Website preview allows you to see the website structure (the Contents tree) 
  109. before you start the actual download. For information on website preview, please 
  110. see the 滴ow website preview works section.

  112. - Multiple selections in the Contents tree
  113. The program is using Ctrl and Shift buttons to let user select multiple tree 
  114. nodes and apply some actions (泥elete, 鄭dd URL Filter, 鉄elect for next 
  115. Download, and 撤roperties) to all of them at once.

  117. - The Contents tree printing
  118. To print the Contents tree use the 擢ile / Print Contents menu.

  120. - Limit the number of the files shown in Contents tree
  121. To minimize memory requirements, by default, the program shows only first 500 
  122. tree nodes. The value can be changed and the limitation can be removed in 
  123. 撤roject Settings / Contents window.

  125. - The contents tree has improved keyboard support
  126. User can press 摘nter button to view selected tree file in the Integrated 
  127. browser. Use 泥elete button to delete the tree node(s).

  129. - Enhanced Properties window
  130. The contents tree 撤roperties window show more information about each file. 
  131. Also you can get useful information about the whole website by looking at the 
  132. properties of the root node of the Contents tree.

  135. The window shows:

  137.  - Number of Found / Processed files

  139. The window allows:
  140.  - Abort the download of one selected file
  141.  - Control the Internet connection bandwidth and CPU utilization by using 
  142.    the speed throttle

  144. - Agent Identification
  145. Sometimes it痴 necessary to change the way WebCopier represents itself to other 
  146. Web servers. This is called 鄭gent Identification, and the default setting is 
  147. 展ebCopier. The program has several preset values you can choose from in 
  148. 撤roject Settings / Advanced / Other window. Also you can type your own 
  149. identification text. Usually the Agent Identification value doesn稚 affect most 
  150. websites. However, sometimes you may experience problems with downloading some 
  151. protected websites until the correct Agent Identification is be set.

  153. - Option to download only the files, that failed before
  154. If some files have not been downloaded due to any kind of errors, next time you 
  155. will have a chance to download them again.

  157. - SSL (HTPPS) support
  158.  
  159. - Project autosave
  160. The program can save the project data automatically every N minutes.
  161. The time interval can be set and the option can be disabled in the 展ebCopier 
  162. Options / General window. The default time interval is 5 minutes.

  164. - Improved large projects support
  165. Opens large projects much faster, also shows special message. 
  166. If the Contents tree has several thousand files, the project will be opened much 
  167. faster, then in previous versions, and special message will be show to let user 
  168. know what program is doing.

  170. - Links update confirmation message
  171. It gives user a chance to cancel the link update, even when the option 填pdate 
  172. Links automatically (撤roject Settings / Advanced / Download window) is set.

  174. - Directory name macros
  175. The directory, where the downloaded files will be saved, may include special 
  176. macros ([%d] and [%t]). The macros can be used when you need to separate each 
  177. project download, because, by default, each next download might overwrite files, 
  178. downloaded before. The [%d] macro inserts the current day it the directory name, 
  179. when the [%t] macro inserts the current time.

  181. - WebCopier remembers directory names
  182. WebCopier remembers the last directory the user used to saved the downloaded 
  183. files and the project file.

  185. - New template keywords
  186. The program has several new template keywords to support new project 
  187. parameters.
  188.  
  189. - HTML files with nonstandard extensions
  190. WebCopier appends HTM extension to all HTML files, that have nonstandard 
  191. extension (for example, ASP). Otherwise, to view HTML files with nonstandard 
  192. extensions, a special web server has to be running on your computer.

  194. - Registered version
  195. The program can be registered to get rid of the advertisement, and be able to 
  196. minimize the Download Info window.

  199. WebCopier 2.1 Bug fixes:

  202. - Dial-up connection list could be empty in Windows 95.

  204. - Dialer might fail to connect to the Internet (if you are already connected), 
  205. and download will be canceled.

  207. - WebCopier might fail to find Netscape bookmarks if the profile(s) files are 
  208. saved in non-default directory.

  210. - If the user closes a project and tries to open it right away, the program 
  211. won稚 be able to open it, but will open any other project.

  213. - If the user is using the option 填pdate Files / Never, the program will open 
  214. a file (but won稚 download it), even when it already exist on his disk.

  216. - Create a new Project by using default template. The Contents tree still shows 
  217. "New Project", regardless of the project name saved in the template.

  219. - The 填pdate Links procedure double checks that the file is indeed HTML file.

  225. 4. Changed default settings

  228. The following default values have been changed in the version 2.1:

  230. - The 溺ax. File Size parameter (撤roject Settings / Download window) default 
  231. value is 1 MB, used to be 2 MB.

  233. - The 的nitialize Tree Before download option (撤roject Settings / Contents 
  234. window) default setting is unchecked.

  236. - When the user creates a new URL filter, the 擢ilter Action by default is 
  237. 的nclude, used to be 摘xclude.

  239. - The "Offsite Links" parameter ("Project Settings / Advanced / Download" 
  240. window) is available only when you have specified to load files from "All 
  241. Servers", or if you have at least one URL filter with the action "Include" 
  242. ("Project Settings / Advanced / URL Filters" window).

  246. 5. New additions to FAQ
  247. ======================================================================

  249. Download
  250. ========

  252. 18. When I start the download, all I get is the first page and that is all. 
  253. What I might be doing wrong?
  254.  
  255. There are two common reasons why WebCopier downloads only few files from a web 
  256. sites.
  257. - The rest of the web site is located on a different server. 
  258. By default WebCopier downloads files from the starting server only. To remove 
  259. this restriction select 鄭ll Servers option in 撤roject Settings / Advanced 
  260. / URL Filters window or create URL Filters that allow download from this 
  261. server.
  262. - The downloaded files do not have common HTML file extension, like .htm 
  263. or .html. 
  264. For example, if a file (which contains HTML code) has extension .dll, it 
  265. won稚 be considered by WebCopier as HTML file and, as the result, won稚 be 
  266. searched for HTML links. To inform WebCopier that it should consider this 
  267. file as HTML file, add extension 電ll to HTML group in 撤roject Settings / 
  268. Advanced / File Filters window.
  269.  
  270. 19. Every time I want to continue to download a project I saved before, the 
  271. program starts to download from the beginning the website. What's wrong?
  272.  
  273. - When you start download, choose the option "Continue previous download". This 
  274. option is available when you have downloaded the project before, and the 
  275. download was not completed.
  276. - Use the option 填pdate Files / When Changed (撤roject Settings / Advanced / 
  277. Download window). This is default setting. To check, have the files been 
  278. changed since the previous download, or not, the program has to start the 
  279. checking from the very beginning of the website. If the file was not changed, 
  280. it won't be downloaded again.
  281. - Uncheck the 的nitialize Tree before Download option (撤roject Settings / 
  282. Contents window). The fact, that at the beginning of the downloaded the tree 
  283. disappears, may cause confusion, you may think that all the files will be 
  284. downloaded again. In version 2.1 (and higher) the 的nitialize Tree before 
  285. Download option is unchecked by default.
  286. - You may set the 填pdate Files option to 哲ever (撤roject Settings / 
  287. Advanced / Download window). In this case, if the file does exist on your 
  288. disk, it won稚 even be checked for any changes and won't be downloaded.

  293. 6. How can I change the default language settings in the Integrated browser and 
  294. the Contents tree? 
  295.  
  296. To change language settings in the Integrated browser:
  297. - load file in the browser
  298. - click right mouse button on the browser
  299. - go to Encoding menu 
  300. - select your language
  301. To change language settings in the Contents tree:
  302. - open 展ebCopier Options / Advanced window
  303. - click on the 鼎ontents Font button
  304. - choose the font which supports your language

  311. The program is FREE and freely distributable.

  313. WebCopier uses the Radiate (formerly Aureate Media) advertising system to show 
  314. banner advertisements. It helps to keep the program FREE.

  316. A form is shown when first using the Radiate system so you may fill in as much 
  317. or as little demographic information about yourself as you want. All information 
  318. provided in this way is OPTIONAL and is NOT PERSONALLY identifiable information. 
  319. No other information is gathered from your computer.

  351. 8. How website preview works
  352. ======================================================================
  353.  
  354. Website preview allows you to see the website structure (the Contents tree) 
  355. before you start the actual download. 
  356.  
  357. You can use this feature to:
  358. - see the website structure only,
  359. - find the site parts you are interested in, and download only them by 
  360.   setting URL filters,
  361. - get an estimation of the total website size.
  362.  
  363. Website preview is not an immediate process. It may take some time to scan, but 
  364. it will be faster then the actual download.
  365.  
  366. The reason - web servers, in contrast with file servers, usually do not give 
  367. the information about site structure.
  368. It means that WebCopier has to load the first HTML file, parse it (find all HTML 
  369. links), load the first found link, parse it, and so on.
  370.  
  371. That痴 why to show the site structure, the program must download and analyze all 
  372. HMTL files. After that you have a choice to keep these files, or to delete them 
  373. automatically . It痴 controlled by 適eep HTML files option in 撤roject Settings 
  374. / Advanced / Other window.
  375.  
  376. Also, during the preview, WebCopier can find each website file size, to let you 
  377. know the total site size. This option is called 泥etailed scanning. When this 
  378. option is on, the preview will take more time, then when the option is off.
  379.  
  380. You can control how deep the site scanning can go by limiting the 溺ax. Number 
  381. of Files parameter (撤roject Settings / Download window), or by setting 
  382. 鏑evels Limits (撤roject Settings / Advanced / Download window).

  386. 9. Third-party copyrighted material
  387. ======================================================================

  389. Most of web site are protected by copyright laws. Some of them are even prohibit 
  390. offline browsing.
  391.  
  392. A user's access to and use of third-party copyrighted material is generally 
  393. governed by the third party.
  394. In all circumstances, the user is responsible for respecting the rights to and 
  395. maintaining the integrity of third-party copyrighted material.
