  7. MIDI Mapper/ sound output

  9. If you get no sound (or only a few sounds) coming out of Koan Plus
  10. make sure your MIDI Mapper is set up correctly.  Look in the on-line
  11. help or refer to your soundcard instruction manual.  Some soundcards
  12. come with default configurations that only use the first 10 MIDI
  13. channels, and Koan pieces often use more.  You should make sure
  14. that all 16 channels are 'active'.
  15.  
  16. Patches/ sounds
  17. ++++++++++++++
  18. Although General MIDI is positioned as being a saviour for the
  19. music industry, as it defines a standard mapping for 128 different
  20. sounds, each soundcard has different qualities of sound for each
  21. 'patch' (various predefined sounds your soundcard plays).  This means
  22. that the instruments that the pieces use will sound better/worse
  23. depending on the soundcard on which you play the piece, or on which
  24. card the piece was originally authored (no author can check their 
  25. piece sounds good on every soundcard - which is where General MIDI
  26. provides some help).  If you really do not like the particular patch
  27. on your card that corresponds to one used in a piece you can
  28. use the MIDI mapper to reassign say patch 39 to play as patch 40.

  30. Also, some soundcards support reverb or chorus which is
  31. very useful for ambient pieces.  Koan pieces can also be written
  32. to take adavantage of other useful controls, such as portamento or
  33. modulation for instance, but not many cards support these parameters.
  34. The volume of each patch will also vary from soundcard to soundcard.
  35.  
  36. Slow or jumpy pieces

  38. We recommend a 486 33Mhz PC or better, especially for the more
  39. rhythmic pieces as the processing requirement can be quite high.
  40. However, slower machines can still run Koan Plus.
  41. You may need to set your Resolution and Cycle values
  42. (Setup Options) to higher values, maybe 50, 100, 200 or even higher 
  43. - refer to the on-line help for further discussion.  Higher values can
  44. even sometimes help to give it that extra smoothness (at the expense
  45. of rhythmic accuracy) even with more powerful machines.  If the software
  46. is making too many demands on your processor you can select 
  47. Low priority mode, again refer to the on-line help.

  49. Time it takes to stop a piece

  51. This is directly governed by your soundcard windows driver, 
  52. and some are faster than others.
  53.  
  54. MIDI File recordings
  55. +++++++++++++++++
  56. It is possible that when recording rhythmic or complex pieces you may
  57. notice a very small number of slight pauses in the MIDI file you have 
  58. recorded.  This is to do with Windows limitations with Koan Plus.  The only
  59. solution is to use a PC with greater processing power.

  61. Gravis Ultrasound

  63. Make sure you set up your MIDI Mapper to use the 'Ultrasound'
  64. setup (for patch caching apps) and not any of the other setups
  65. like Ultra 1024, Ultra 512 or Ultra 256 which are for non-patch
  66. caching applications. If you don't do this then some patches will
  67. be loaded incorrectly.
