- XMIDI files (those with the extension XMI) are a compressed MIDI format.
- XMI files are rather obscure in the music field, but quite prominent
- members of the gaming society. Many games have they're music stored in
- XMI format, often times all in one file, just appended to each other. Since
- XMI's are already compressed, compression usually cannot hide their presence.
- When ripping XMI's, chances are you will get quite a few. There are
- usually different XMI's for every different sound card needed (i.e. you'll
- get a batch of MT32 XMI's and a batch od GM XMI's).
-
- Usage:
-
- RIPXMI <filename.ext>
-
- One can usually tell which file the music in a game is stored in. Most
- are something like MUSIC or AUDIO or even XMI (plus an extension, of
- course). Following now is a list of games known to contains XMI-music.
-
- Lands Of Lore
- Dune 2
- The Legend Of Kyrandia
- The Hand Of Fate
- Master Of Orion
- Privateer
- Ultima 7
- Ultima 7 Part 2 : Serpent Isle
- Ultima 8 : Pagan
- The 7th Guest (a must!)
- Ultima Underworld
- Ultima Underworld 2
- Command Adventure Starship
-
- Obviously, most companies stick to a certain format. Any game
- orchestrated by Team Fat (those dudes who did The 7th Guest and Master
- Of Orion) will probably be XMI's. Any game by Westwood Studios will
- probably have XMI's. Any future game by Origin will also probably use
- XMI's.
-
- Now that you have your XMI's, what do you do with them? Convert them
- all to MID using MEGAXMI.EXE. MegaXMI is just a little XMI to MID
- batch file a friend wrote to better implement XMI2MID better, which doesn't
- use wildcards. So now you can type "MEGAXMI *.XMI" and sit back
- and watch the MID's roll in. Both MEGAXMI.EXE and XMI2MID.EXE must be in
- same directory in order for it to work. Play your new MIDI's and root out
- those that don't match your specific synth and Enjoy!
-
- Thanks to Jeremy Ginsberg for MEGAXMI. :)
