  33. Introduction

  36.      For over a year, I've been using my Gravis Ultrasound to create music of
  37. one sort or another at home and then coming back to University (Sheffield) and
  38. considering submiting the results to the GUS archive. Well, I've finally got
  39. around to doing it!
  40.      The files contained in the zip-archive are a series of my own creations
  41. and are described below.
  42.      I only use Midisoft Recording Session as I don't have a keyboard but am
  43. familiar with Musical Notation, so it's quite a slow process to compose any
  44. pieces, but I'm pleased with some of the results.
  45.      I tend not to use many midi effects as I find them too time comsuming for
  46. what they can add to the music. The only one I do use is to double up the piano
  47. and vibes sounds when playing as a solo instrument to give independent left and
  48. right channels.
  49.  
  50.      I hope these pieces are at least somewhat interesting. Please email me
  51. with any comments, criticism or suggestions - even improved versions! Feel free
  52. to use these in any way you wish - I wouldn't mind hearing the results!

  63. NICK1.MID     Size: 22,759    First Attempt at my own composition - heavily
  64.                                 edited later to give something almost bearable
  65.  
  66. NICK2.MID     Size: 9,237    Second Composition - much more stately than the
  67.                 first one. Basically a short piece of Chamber
  68.                 Music, but I couldn't resist the Pizzicato
  69.                 Strings and the Timpani.

  71. NICK3.MID     Size: 12,674    Third Composition - Another classical
  72.                 composition using a much 'bigger' sound towards
  73.                 the end and relying on a melody from the cello.

  75. NICK4.MID     Size: 19,688    Fourth Composition - A slow rock piece which
  76.                 makes use of the chord sequence from Eric
  77.                 Clapton's song 'Old Love', but I don't think
  78.                                 it's TOO obvious.......

  80. NICK5.MID     Size: 7,827    'Blackadder' - Theme Tune to the B.B.C. TV
  81.                 comedy series. The actual T.V. program has
  82.                 several versions depending on which series you
  83.                 are watching - I think that this is probably
  84.                 closest to 'Blackadder the 2nd' or 'Blackadder
  85.                 the 3rd'.

  87. NICK6.MID     Size: 15,022    Another original composition - This one was
  88.                 begun as an experiment with the the different
  89.                 pads available and evolved with the addition of
  90.                 the percussion to the final piece.

  92. NICK7.MID     Size: 22,687    The next composition - a fully orchestral piece.
  93.                                 I was particularly pleased with the third theme
  94.                                 based on rhythm from the string section with
  95.                                 melody and harmony from the wind and brass.

  97. NICK8.MID     Size: 2,322    A short, simple piece composed when I was
  98.                 feeling a little under the weather.

  100. NICK9.MID     Size: 20,061    I don't know how to describe this piece - try it
  101.                 and see what you think. Tucked away is that same
  102.                 chord sequence from Mr. Clapton.

  104. NICK10.MID   Size: 6,428    'Treasure Hunt' - Theme Tune to the British
  105.                 Channel 4 game show. I think that it is pretty
  106.                 accurate to the original.

  108. NICK11.MID   Size: 6,058    'Last of the Summer Wine' - Theme Tune to the
  109.                 B.B.C. TV comedy series - not accurate to the
  110.                 original, but not bad anyway!

  112. NICK12.MID   Size: 22,145    Another Composition - A jazz-rock piece which
  113.                 contains an attempt at an accelerating drum
  114.                 solo. I have then shamelessly borrowed a section
  115.                 from 'Tubular Bells 2' by Mike Oldfield as it
  116.                 seemed appropriate - I decided to leave out the
  117.                                 bagpipes in my version........

  119. NICK13.MID   Size: 28,521    Another jazz-rock composition based on two
  120.                 distinct sections with a short introductory
  121.                 section which is repeated at the end.

  123. NICK14.MID   Size: 14,446    'Knight Rider' - Theme Tune to the long-running
  124.                 T.V. series. I had great trouble finding a
  125.                 suitable instrument for the top line of
  126.                 semi-quavers but I've eventually settled for a
  127.                                 combination that works - sort of......!

  129. NICK15.MID   Size: 29,927    A more lively rock composition consisting of a
  130.                 main theme and varius 'interuptions' and one
  131.                 modulation.

  133. NICK16.MID   Size: 11,362    'Red Dwarf' - Theme Tune to the B.B.B. TV
  134.                 comedy series produced at the request of my
  135.                 brother, an ardant fan!
  136.  
  137. NICK17.MID   Size: 32,233       'Eternal Flame' by the Bangles - I don't have
  138.                                 a copy of the actual song, and I know that it's
  139.                                 missing some percussion (triangle etc.), but for
  140.                                 3 hours work, I'm very happy with the result.

  143. STING_N1.MID   Size: 38,467    The first of two arrangements of songs by Sting.
  144.                 This one is called 'Straight to my Heart' from
  145.                 the album 'Nothing Like the Sun'. This piece was
  146.                 my first attempt with the GUS and Recording
  147.                 Session over a year ago now. It has undergone
  148.                 gradual change as I have learnt more about the
  149.                 use of Recording Session and the GUS's abilities.
  150.                 This is a relatively faithful reproduction of
  151.                                 the original song except for the steel drums in
  152.                                 the introduction which I couldn't get quite
  153.                                 right (- so they're left out).

  155. STING_N2.MID   Size: 8,147    This second song is called 'The Secret Marriage'.
  156.                 This version contains additional material from
  157.                 me (Vibes, Flute+Oboe) as I felt that it sounded
  158.                 to bare without the vocal line.
