- Subject: cyberia
-
- I bought Cyberia when it first came out and returned it within a couple of
- days because Interplay's solution to my GUS sound probs was to just turn off
- the sound by typing "Set Blaster =" at the DOS prompt (thereby setting no
- sound card at all!). Anyway, tech support said they MIGHT patch the sound
- to support more sound cards besides SB (the only card supported if I remember).
- So call them because that was a couple of months ago.
-
- On another note...
- does anyone have Interplay
- (oops)'s BBS number? 714-252-2822 doesn't work as it's listed in the Descent
- manual...

- Fellow GUSsers,
-
- This is mainly for all the GUSsers in Holland:
-
- I read a lot about the 'Ultrasound experience CD' and most of the
- time, if not all, people say 'get it'. Well, I live in Holland
- near schiphol airport and I wonder where I could get this CD.

- Thank you for your time,

- Hello all.
-
- > Here's my input on the Win95 beta. It seems to work MUCH
- > better than the older win (3.11), and responds faster,
- > looks ALOT better, and i mean ALOT!.
-
- I have to agree. Look where it is coming from - not where Microsoft said
- it would be going to. Anyone who believes what Microsoft PR says is living
- in a dream world! I mean, just look at the Windows Sound System :-)
-
- > I tried to run mk2 from a dos window, and it got stuck, but
- > within windows itself everything seemed to work fine.
-
- I have noticed with a lot of games under Win95, to get the GUS working, I
- just created a seperate command shortcut, with the all the Gravis
- settings in the config and autoexec sections and then booting with that.
-
- All of the things work fine, but the big problem is that the Win3.11 drivers
- that we have to use under Win95 often corrupt / sound gets distorted /
- stuffed up when two apps try to play sound at once.

- I'm a new GUS owner, and I was wondering if any of you old GUS gurus
- could tell us which patches you added to your normal GUS .PATs.
- I replaced around 10 pats, drums and electric guitars, the difference
- is clear in the first level of Doom I.. music is more powerful now...
- but some instruments still need to be more realistic.
-
- I suppose 1MB is required to make decent replacements. My Max
- 1.8 has only 512 (It's not easy to find the damn DRAMs here). Anyone
- wants to sell?
- Ahem, anyway, there are TONS of patches out... Some are worse than the
- original, some are too big, some just don't fit there. The idea is to
- pick the only the best from each pack and compile them in a single
- EXCELLENT little pack. Don't say "well, do it yourself then"; I'm not
- just lazy, I'm also a GUS rookie. :)
-
- Has any of you guys gone thru the work of checking them all and making
- a list of the ones that are worth using not for specific stuff, but in
- general?
- I think most of us would like to see your list of "must-have PATs" :)

- To get FX with XWING on the GUS you must either put the GUS at 220 (since
- XWING only looks for SB's at 220) or you must have a real SB in with your
- GUS. Even with real SB's, it must be at 220 for it to work. In later
- LucasArts games they allow you to select the port address but not in good

-
- For those that use XWING I find that Megaem 3.04 is better in many ways

- Hi All!
-
- I have just bought a MUSICSTAR MIDI keyboard (MKB02) package to assist my
- kids with learning music. I know it's pretty basic to you knowledgeable
- sorts but it should suit the purpose.
-
- Could any of you answer the following:
-
- 1.
- I am having problems setting it up reliably despite reading and following
- the manual (Novel, eh? Reading the manual I mean :-). It's quite
- straightforward but the software supplied (Windows) does not seem to
- recognise the GUS MIDI driver properly. I can configure it OK but there
- is no sound. Although I have managed to get it to work, some of the time.
- Anybody else using this keyboard with a GUS?
-
- 2.
- Where can I find the best info on MIDI? Basic stuff to get me started.
-
- 3.
- The company that market the keyboard (Reveal of America) have a
- conference on CI$ where they offer assistance, updates, etc. I am not on
- that system. Can I access it via the Internet?
-
- 4.
- Which is the best software to use with this system?
-
- 5.
- Are there any MIDI files that actually sound like the music we listen to,
- pop chart music for example. The stuff I have heard is so bland and
- contrived. I suppose it's a question of copyright?

- Thanks for your time...

- Hi, Vince, there are growing (literally!) problems with the digest.
- First, please delete from the list the guy who has his mailbox full. His
- stupid server is bouncing the mail back to the digest -- complete with a
- complete repost of everything. Secondly, you recommended that we say
- "yes" when asked whether to reply to all recipients. However, I believe
- it is causing the double-posting to the digest. Please fix so that we
- can still say yes to reply to all recipients, but single postings to
- digest. If not, I will say "no." Also, it would be great if you can
- write a stripper/truncator/mail bounce backer/rejector on posts greater
- than, say 50 lines long. I think that's a reasonable amount of space to work
- with (anyone else can suggest a number), and it prevents accidental reposts of
- the entire digest. If anybody UNIX savvy can help him with the batch
- file, please do. Thanks.

- Subject: Vince's Prob's and onother guy's
-
- Hey Vince,
-
- This is my first suggestion:
-
- Since your problem is Windows not DOS, the RAM settings may be the
- culprit so...
- Set all wait states, etc to the highest numbers. See if this works. If
- not...
-
- Reinstall windows. Its a pain, but often it can solve little anoying
- things that may be impossible to track down. First try installing over
- the current setup to see if one samll file got corupted, then if that
- doesn't work, reinstall fresh, which is a royal pain. Also make sure
- you have fresh Windows drivers.
-
- See if you can get an OS/2 boot floppy set from someone and boot off
- of them. OS/2 tends to be sensitive about memory speeds and refreshes
- and if it loads, chances are the settings are okay.
-
- Also, the ISA Speedstar should be a problem, i had one w/ a GUS and no
- prob's. It CAN use IRQ 2 for EGA compatability. Don't think it needs
- DMA.
-
- To Khor Chin Heong,
-
- Seems clear the real problem is with the motherboard. Not all MB's are
- of the same design or caliber, and i think yours is on the lower end
- of that spectrum. See if you can get it exchanged for one that is know
- to work. The DRAM refresh will affect the DMA since DMA stands for
- Direct Memory Access i believe.
-
- About EPAS,
-
- Just use it for the submit directory, its the only current thing on
- the site, but VERY useful. If something is new, put it or check there.
-
- Interwave,
-
- I've heard all about its Win95 support, but what about WinNT and OS/2?
- Anyone?
