- Hi,
-
- I just wondered if I could get a quick survey of the recording performance
- of various makes of sound card. I do some digital recording and editing at
- work on PCs and have a system at home too. To my consternation, I can't seem
- to get smooth 44.1 kHz 16-bit stereo (i.e. CD quality) out of any of the
- sound cards we have at work. For example one of these is a Pro-Audio
- Spectrum 16 (a bit old) and one is a new Diamond Multi-Media Board (which
- uses a very similar codec to the GUS MAX). The Pro-Audio lives in a 486DX-66
- and the Diamond in a Pentium 90 (PCI etc).
-
- I've tried three programs with the Pro-Audio, in Windows Goldwave 3.0, and
- in DOS the RECFILE program which came with the card and a specialist Speech
- editing/analysis package. Goldwave seems to behave erratically, seldom
- recording anything. The recfile program seems to work on the face of it but
- when you listen back to the sound the channels swap intermittently which
- means samples (WORDS) are being dropped occasionally. The specialist program
- has the same problem but also occasionally _reports_ errors and stops.
- Performance is fine with mono 16-bit 44.1 kHz.
-
- I can't get the Diamond card to record anything sensible, except at lower
- sample/bit rates.
-
- Of course at home I have a lowly SLC66 (thats a half baked DX66) with a GUS
- MAX card and have no difficulty with either Goldwave or the specialist
- program (mind you I did write the MAX driver for that!) even up to 48 kHz
- stereo. Needless to say all the DMA channels are set to 5 or higher (16-bit
- channels) for all systems and Wintune reports similar or better disk/memory
- performance for the machines at work compared to my home system. So my only
- comment at this stage is DRIVERS!!!! Could it be that all this
- updating/re-releasing/waiting is worth the trouble? Is the GUS a superior
- beast afterall, despite all our complaining?
-
- I'd appreciate anyone who's interested replying to me with their experiences
- with any other soundcards/systems either to the digest or directly to
-
- jamesc@mail.medoto.unimelb.edu.au.
