- Subject: Power Chords and Win 95 Beta - Update
-
- If you have been trying to use any version of Power Chords with Win 95 beta
- you've probably found:
-
- The patches don't cache
-
- If you pre-cache patches outside Power Chords it works for those patches.
-
- Here's why:
-
- The messaging specifications of Win 95 have changed from Windows 3.1. Power
- Chords Pro uses special messages to the UltraSound driver to perform patch
- caching in a way that is optimized for our applications. Unfortunately due to
- the change in the specification, there is now a conflict with those message
- numbers in Win 95.
-
- We are working to resolve the problem in 3 ways:
-
- 1) Microsoft may accommodate the old messages in Win 95
-
- 2) Gravis may alter the drivers to accomodate the new specs
-
- 3) We will offer Windows Standard patch caching calls in a future upgrade
- (well in time for the final version of Windows 95) which will work correctly
- with the UltraSound.
-
-
- UPDATE:
- =======
-
- I have been informed by Microsoft that the changes have been made so that
- applications which are marked as Windows 3.1 apps will be able to use the old
- patch caching messages.
-
- I am waiting on a new build of Win 95 to test this.
-
- If this is true, I can issue a patch so that your copy of Power Chords will
- work with Win 95 when it is released, using the current GUS drivers.
-
- New versions of Power Chords will use Win 95 specific drivers (when Gravis
- releases them), or standard Windows patch caching calls with the old ones.
-
- I'll keep you posted when I get a new build.

- I heard of his patches, but I never did download them. Unfortunately, I
- don't think those patches are still available in the mirror sites. Most
- of the really old files have been deleted.

-
- A demo tape or demo CD with comparisons of similar instrument patches
- is a great idea, in a similar way that the Ultrasound Experience
- compares FM to wavetable and various GM sound cards.
-
- Question is, how far and wide can you distribute it for non-local
- consumers?
-
- I, for one, am certainly interested in getting some quality patches.

- Have you tried the Apollo program? It does reverb, for concert hall,
- club, church effects. But as for specific guitar effects such as flange,
- I don't know. However, I think Francois Dion, the guy who made some of
- Howling Dog patches and has some FAQs written about the UltraSound, may
- know more. His address would be in the FAQ, or ask Eric Bell.
