D:\PURE\BRASS The realistic brass and sax sounds you've been looking for! BRASBLAS Brass Blast. Short, clean and clear. BBRASLOW Nice multisampled solo brass patch. Bright and realistic. SAXUAL Tenor patch, a nice mid afternoon jazz sound with some reverb. SOULYSAX Clean solo sax, very listenable, multisampled. D:\PURE\BREAKS\LIVE Live Recorded Drum Loops This is an incredible set of patches featuring live-recorded drumming (and a couple other special treats) giving you the feel and the sound of a live drummer that is sooo hard to achieve with out piles of MIDI tweeking and racks of signal processing gear. The reverb level and atmosphere of most of these loops are carefully matched, meaning you can switch from one loop to the other to create a drum track. There are piles of stock and standard drum riffs that you need to have in your collection, along with the various fills, cymbal crashes, kick drum / cymbal end hits etc. that you need. NILON Reverby plucked nylon string sound. GRUNGE_1 Fry fuzz tone on this 1 bar loop which will send you to Nirvana... DUODIST Two dissonant distorted guitar notes alternate. GR_LNG_1 Beautifully sustained super fuzz open fifth chord. DLYCHORD Harmonic strum with digital delay on it. Deep. PICK_DLY Picked muted string sound with d-delay. VOCO_LP1 Two very interesting looped vocal effects. VOCO_LP2 DDL_VOX Delayed synth-like vocal sound. Ready for 50's Sci-fi. COUGH Yes, its a cough. HUGH Grunt. VOXFXLP1 Three looped vox effects with lots of rhythm to them. They would make VOXFXLP2 a good background rhythm for an interesting composition. A solid assortment of Moog bass patches well represents that classic instrument on your sound card. There's lots of patches for acid and techno, hip-hop or experimental, in fact there are useful sounds in this part of the set for most any style of music. DEKAYBAS Medium full in sound, medium complex. Good solid foundation sound. LOTATOP Synthy with a nice bite in the attack. SOLIDMOO Standard must-have moog bass. RESOMOOG Cool resonance effect. HORABASS Short copper string attack - bright. ORGOBASS B3 type bass. PALLBASS Octaves, a bit edgy. SPACEBAS Digital delay decay in orbit -or- Sputnik lands on a trampoline. WARKBASS Can you Wark like a Warkrus? Animalistic. AHAYBASS New mown hay on a summer's eve. FECTBASS Pluck it deep in a tunnel. HARMBASS Swirling glassy texture. A tangible timbre. ACIDISH Somewhere there's a 303 missing this acid sound. AJUNO_BS Well rounded 106 sound. OWCHBASS You'll be inspired to pound these notes out. PULSE_BS Percussive beginning useful for lead bass then pulses nicely if held. SMOOTHIE Smooth like a melted malted. SPITBASS Nice and nasty to hold down the bottom. STIKBASS A bit o' the old thumb snap on the attack. WET_RESO Great stock synth bass sound with res. ATAKOBEY Clicky and good. MOMESSBS MOR Synth Bass. SIMPLE_B Simple, an easy fit into many styles. BOW_BASS Soft but strong. CENTX_BS Cyborg metal-bass. HD_BASS In the groove, lightly layered, full but not over-blown. HOUSE_BS Smooth but meaty. KNOCK_BS Techno-click bass. LEO_BASS Ballad like, elastic tone. Quite nice to listen to. SM_STAND Good for holding down an electro-groove. SYNWOOD Played sensitively in slow passages, this one's very responsive. SUN_BASS Pretty sound, bass layered with rainbow strings. MEGAWET Mega wet. ECHO_VFX Special effect type bass, with white noize burst repeating in decay. D:\PURE\SYNTHS\STRINGS Jason Fitzpatrick has a talent for delicately blending sounds to create a new palette for musical expression. Many of the string samples here demonstrate the results of his work in the way timbres are combined to make the final product. There are also, of course, some outstanding pure string section sounds. BOTTLEST A beautiful glassy chime blended with silky strings. CHIF_STR Chiff at the start of a low clear deep string section. DING_STR Lush section mixed with phantasmagorical wind chimes. (Pretty disappointing to see so many supported sound cards- but no GUS) Of course I had to resort to trying the 16 bit (Win3.x) drivers we already have. Digital sound is OK, but no MIDI. However, I think the problem is not really the driver, but the way the MIDI Mapper works. I was able to load patches with PatchManager and play them- all seemed to load and play correctly except for one- acpiano.pat (Channel 0). Once I loaded a few patches, I got got Drums/Percussion when playing CANYON.MID that ships with Windows95- but no other instruments played. So it appears that there is a problem with the mapping. I tried editing the instrument mapping by hand, but it made no difference (but then again- I was only experimenting since I don't really know how Windows95 uses the midi mapper.) I also noted that the new MIDIMAP.CFG file that ships with Windows95 is only 1 byte. I tried copying the MIDIMAP.CFG file from the GUS driver disks but no joy. Well its been fun trying to get the GUS going with a BETA operating system, but I guess we'll have to wait for Gravis to release new drivers when Windows95 ships - unless someone else has any pointers/ideas?
