  15.
  16. Wonder if gus-music will bounce my attempt today? Not surprising there
  17. weren't many contributions in today's Digest.
  18.
  19. >    I just bought a Kawai KC20 synthesizer.  Besides standard MIDI
  20. >connections, it also has a serial port interface.  Does connecting this
  21. >to a computer require special software for the computer to recognize MIDI
  22. >data transmitted via a serial port?  Does MidiSoft recognize this
  23. interface?  Any other programs that do?
  24.
  25. Unless someone else knows, you ought to find out from Kawai exactly
  26. what their serial interface expects. The MIDI signals that come
  27. out of the GUS game port are essentially the same as from a
  28. serial port (except of course that the pin-outs are different, after
  29. all this is meant to be a game port). The MIDI box converts these
  30. signals to the 'current-loop' signals expected by MIDI devices.
  31. This implies perhaps that you could connect the Kawai straight to the
  32. game port without a MIDI box, so long as you had a suitable cable.
  33.
  34. As for Windows software, MidiSoft and the other applications talk
  35. to device driver software, not direct to the hardware. The
  36. device driver for the GUS MIDI port is called ultmport.drv. To
  37. get the apps to talk to one of the standard COM ports, you would
  38. need a MIDI device driver which did this - I've no idea whether
  39. this is available.
