  16. What is it ?
  17. ============

  19.    Pro Patches Lite is an another upgrade for GUS patch set.  It has 145
  20.    replacements for UltraSound patch set. Many of the patches are smaller
  21.    versions of the large ones also available through the internet
  22.    (french horn,brass section, pianos, flutes, basses and many more ... ).
  23.    This one really sounds GOOD !!! Pro Patches Lite also includes handy
  24.    "patmenu" program to manage custom patch sets ( like in ProPats III
  25.    package, only a lot better ! ). Different versions for DOS and Windows.

  28.    Version 1.40 provides: A lot brighter sounding drums !!
  29.                           New patches (nylongtr, marcato...) and bug fixes.

  75.         * A GUS/MAX/ACE with 1 MB of memory. Well, it could work also with
  76.           512 KB. At least with patch cacheing applications.
  77.         * Your original patches must be in the "midi" directory under your
  78.           ultrasound directory.

  92.         * Won't overwrite any of the original patches. Makes backups.

  94.           without touching installation disks.
  95.         * Special game compability mode with reduced patch set size (5365 kB).
  96.         * Mega-Em 2.xx compatible - no warnings at all when loading patches.

  137.    1. Uncompress the files pplt_*.a* to some other directory.
  138.       For example: md c:\patches
  139.                    cd c:\patches

  142. (!)2. Make an environment variable called "propats" to point to the directory
  143.       you just created. To do this put a line "set propats=<directory>" in
  144.       your "c:\autoexec.bat" file. It could be the first line in the
  145.       autoexec.bat file. In this case the autoexec.bat would look like this

  166.       "PATMENU\PATMENU.EXE S". This should start a process
  167.       for copying the new patches and backuping the old ones.

  177. Using Pro Patches Lite (READ!!)
  178. ===============================

  181.    Important Notes
  182.    --------------

  184.      - I have nothing to do with any other patch sets available !!!
  185.        The name of this package is "Pro Patches Lite"  , not "ProPats"
  186.        nor "Pro Patches". 
  187.        I must admit that the names are quite alike, but I hope this note and
  188.        the change in the name corrects the mistake.
  189.  
  190.      - If you have 512 GUS, you'll have at least problems with MegaEm 2.xx
  191.        and Games that preload the patch set. I have noticed that many PPLT
  192.        patches just can't be loaded as 8-bit 22KHz and this is what 512 KB
  193.        GUS often does !

  196.    Patmenu
  197.    -------
  198.  
  199.      - You can copy the Patmenu.exe file to some other directory, as long
  200.        as the .ini files stay in the "patmenu" directory. A good place
  201.        is some directory in your path.
  202.  
  203.      - Before playing games you can enter a command "patmenu p". This reduces
  204.        the size of the patch set. After playing, you must enter
  205.        command "patmenu s" to use all the Pro Patches Lite patches again.
  206.        Note that you don't have to do this for every game ! Do it only when
  207.        you feel that some of the instruments are missing in the game musics.
  208.        Especially games that have different music in every level need this
  209.        mode. For example, a batch file for DOOM would look like this:

  217.      - When started the first time Patmenu creates a directory called "backup"
  218.        under your \ultrasnd\midi directory. Patmenu uses this directory to
  219.        backup the original patches which are replaced by PPLT patches.
  220.        DON'T EVER remove this directory !!!

  222.      - Read the "patmenu.txt" for more information about the Patmenu program.

  228.      - How to use Pro Patches Lite with ultramid and "-c" parameter:
  229.         * Copy "ppatlite.ini" file to your "\ultrasnd\midi" directory
  230.         * Before loading ultramid enter command "patmenu p".
  231.         * Enter command "Ultramid -nppatlite.ini -c".
  232.        If you get error "Error loading patch", try again.

  235.    Megaem 3.xx
  236.    -----------

  238.      - How to use Pro Patches Lite with MegaEm 3.xx :
  239.  
  240.         *  If you have version 3.06b or later just copy the "large.bnk" file
  241.            to the same directory with MegaEm. No renaming needed.
  242.  
  243.         *  If you have version 3.04b or earlier copy the "large.bnk" file
  244.            from your Pro Patches Lite directory to your Ultrasound
  245.            directory and rename it to "1024.bnk".

  248.      - For some reason, if you would like to rebuild the bank file with
  249.        megaem 3.04b or ealier, here is the procedure:
  250.         *  First, delete the old MEGAEM 3 patch set (if exists) in your
  251.            ultrasound directory ( file 1024.bnk ).
  252.         *  Second, enter command "patmenu q".
  253.         *  Then load megaem 3.xx - it should now build a new patch set.
  254.         *  Enter command "patmenu s" to enable all the Pro Patches Lite patches.

  257.    MegaEm 2.xx
  258.    -----------
  259.  
  260.      - The original GUS tom drums must have some unknown magic in them,
  261.        because PPLT toms can't be heard with MegaEm 2.xx emulation.
  262.        So, use the "MegaEm Compability mode" also with MegaEm 2.xx. That
  263.        should fix the problem.

  285.    whatever purposes you want to.

  291.    Especially, if you have some patches/wavs or whatever sounds,
  292.    better than ones in PPLT, I would appreciate if you e-mailed them to me
  293.    or pointed where I can find them. Don't mind about size of the patches,
  294.    many big patches sound still good when they are sqeezed smaller.
  295.    Especially patches that are used with professional synths are often
  296.    unnecessarily big and can easily be made smaller.
