- 1.0.0-What is GusPro ?
- ══════════════════════
-
- Warning: This text is written by a German, so don`t expect any grammar
- miracles!
- GusPro is a collection of different drivers, programs and new GM patches to
- enhance your GUS/MAX/ACE (furtheron simply called Gus) in areas of
- compatability and sound quality. However, you will need a 1024k Gus to
- be able to fully use this software package. So if you haven`t yet, upgrade.
- It is well worth the money. To say it right away, I only collected these
- files over the past few months. Everything was made by other people on the
- Net (exept those little batch files, those are made by me) who will be
- credited later on. This current package contains of multiple files named
- "GUSPRO00.xxx" where "xxx" is "ARJ","A01","A02",... . You need to get all
- files which start with "GUSPRO00". Future files will only contain add-ons
- and/or updates to this package. They will be named "GUSPRO01.xxx",
- "GUSPRO02.xxx" and so on.

- 2.0.0-Installation of GusPro
- ════════════════════════════
- 2.1.0-How do I install GusPro ?
- ───────────────────────────────
-
- Since I am not a pro-programer, I only made a small installation program,
- which is not fancy, but serves it`s purpose. Be sure that you have set the
- <ultradir> variable in your autoexec.bat. Before you install you might
- want to make a backup of your patches and/or your Gus utilities, just in
- case you run into problems with the new files later. Also, after the
- installation, you will want to check for duplicate files, since you might
- have had already some of the drivers and programs GusPro installs, only in
- different directorys. Keep the newer versions, although I tried to include
- only the newest versions in this package.
- To install, type <install> at the dos prompt.
-
-
- 2.2.0-Directory structure diagram
- ─────────────────────────────────
-
- This is a diagram of the directorys beeing made and files copyed in the
- directory stated by the <ultradir> variable after you ran the install
- program.
- Refer to "files.txt" for a list of all the files contained in GusPro.
-

- 3.0.0-Included drivers - This section refers to the files in \DRV
- ═════════════════════════════════════════════════════════════════
- 3.1.0-Which driver for what ?
- ────────────────────────────
-
- Included are a number of drivers to update games to support the Gus
- standard. To decide which driver to use, you should refer to the
- instructions contained in every directory. Simply type <readme> in any
- directory and it will give you instructions on the particular files
- contained in it. I made a few programs which automate the process of
- updating games with these drivers. More on this in the next sections.
- Note: It is necessary to add a line in your autoexec.bat which states
- were to find the drivers:
- SET DRVDIR=<driver-root-dir>
- e.g.: SET DRVDIR=C:\ULTRASND\DRV
- Be sure to have your ultrasound directory (usually C:\ULTRASND) included
- in the path line of your "autoexec.bat" (Note: Not the same as DRVDIR).
- Refer to your Ultrasound or Dos manual for instructions on how to do this.
-
-
- 3.2.0-Where can I get the newest versions ?
- ───────────────────────────────────────────
-
- For uploads of newest versions of these drivers check out
- archive.epas.utoronto.ca:pub/pc/ultrasound/submit
- and pub/pc/ultrasound/gravis
-
-
- 3.2.1-AIL drivers installation
- ──────────────────────────────
-
- For instructions on how to use these drivers type <readme> in \DRV\AIL.
- To simplify the process of updateing the drivers go to the directory which
- contains the drivers you want to update (e.g. a game directory) and type:
- <AILGUS XXX YYY> Where XXX stands for the MusicDriver to replace and YYY
- for the DigitalDriver. If you only want to change one driver specify NONE
- for the other one.
- E.g.: <DLLGUS NONE SBLASTER> changes only the DigitalDriver and not the
- MusicDriver.
- Note: Don`t use any file-extension like .DGI in SBLASTER.DGI.
- Only type SBLASTER.
- To restore the original drivers type <orggus>.
-
-
- 3.2.2-ADV drivers installation
- ──────────────────────────────
-
- For instructions on how to use these drivers type <readme> in \DRV\ADV.
- To simplify the process of updateing the drivers go to the directory which
- contains the drivers you want to update (e.g. a game directory) and type:
- <ADVGUS XXX YYY> Where XXX stands for the MusicDriver to replace and YYY
- for the DigitalDriver. If you only want to change one driver specify NONE
- for the other one.
- E.g.: <ADVGUS NONE SBDIG> changes only the DigitalDriver and not the
- MusicDriver.
- Note: Don`t use any file-extension like .ADV in SBDIG.ADV.
- Only type SBDIG.
- To restore the original drivers type <orggus>.
-
-
- 3.2.3-DLL drivers installation
- ──────────────────────────────
-
- For instructions on how to use these drivers type <readme> in \DRV\DLL.
- To simplify the process of updateing the drivers go to the directory which
- contains the drivers you want to update (e.g. a game directory) and type:
- <DLLGUS XXX YYY> Where XXX stands for the MusicDriver to replace and YYY
- for the DigitalDriver. If you only want to change one driver specify NONE
- for the other one.
- E.g.: <DLLGUS NONE A32SBDG> changes only the DigitalDriver and not the
- MusicDriver.
- Note: Don`t use any file-extension like .DLL in A32SBDG.DLL.
- Only type A32SBDG.
- To restore the original drivers type <orggus>.

- MegaEm 3.03." "If you got any of those `Can't load sample` (or something,
- I can't remember becuase it was long ago) errors because you used custom
- patch sets with your GUS, then this will get around that problem.

- ──────────────
-
- For information/documentation type <readme> in the \SBOSMAX directory.
-
-
- 5.0.0-Included GM replacement patches
- ═════════════════════════════════════
- 5.1.0-What are they and how do I use them ?
- ───────────────────────────────────────────
-
- Included are replacement patches for the Gus GM patch set located in \MIDI.
- After you ran <install>, about half of them will be replaced by instrument
- files of higher qualitity then the ones which ship with the Gus. Although
- the replacement patches are bigger than the originals, I have never
- experienced any patch loading problems with them (exept MegaEm, that is
- why this package comes with a 1024k .bnk file which will allow you to run
- MegaEm without any problems).
- I collected all replacement patches from various sites on the Net and
- included the best of the bunch in GusPro (of course, there is some factor
- of personal taste involved). You will notice the quality difference! Type
- <demo> for a demonstration song.
-
-
- 5.2.0-Alternative patches and "out of memory" messages
- ──────────────────────────────────────────────────────
-
- I included 2 different versions of the electric piano patches (epiano1 and
- epiano2) and the clean guitar. The alternative patches are named
- "epiano1.pa2", "epiano2.pa2" and "cleangtr.pa2". The default clean guitar
- has more richness to it, while the second one has more pluck (confused?
- Listen for yourself). The e-paino patches are very different, so use the
- ones which fit best to the music you are listening to or making. I prefer
- the clean guitar and the e-painos installed by default.
- Although it has never happened to me, if you run into an "out of Gus memory"
- error in a game or Windows, try changing the line "0=minigrnd" in
- "ultrasnd.ini" to "0=acpiano". "acpiano" is about half the size of
- "minigrnd" and has a considerable less quality.
- If you are able to improve any of the included patches, have ones of
- higher quality or made new ones (only GM compatible ones) don`t hesitate
- to pass them along to me, or give me a site were I can get them. I might
- include them in my next add-on if they are not too big to be usefull and
- the quality is higher than the ones already included.
-
-
- 5.3.0-Where can I get more of them ?
