  21.    This diskette contains drivers and programs for Windows 3.1 users who
  22.    have a Sound Blaster 2.0.

  37. III. Installing the drivers
  38. ---------------------------
  39.  
  40.    1. Start Windows v3.1.
  41.  
  42.    2. Open the Control Panel and select the Drivers icon.
  43.  
  44.    3. At a minumum, you should have the following driver names in the
  45.       Installed Drivers list:
  46.  
  47.             MIDI Mapper
  48.             Timer
  49.             [MCI] MIDI Sequencer
  50.             [MCI] Sound
  51.  
  52.       If you have any Sound Blaster or Adlib drivers installed, please remove
  53.       them with the REMOVE button and restart Windows before continuing.
  54.       If any of these drivers are not listed, please add them before
  55.       continuing.  (See your Windows manual for details on adding these
  56.       drivers.)  Make sure you restart Windows after making changes to the
  57.       driver list.
  58.  
  59.    4. Click on the ADD button.
  60.  
  61.    5. Select Unlisted or Updated driver and click on OK.
  62.  
  63.    6. Insert the floppy containing the drivers.
  64.  
  65.    7. Type in the drive letter of the floppy drive containing the driver disk.
  66.  
  67.    WARNING! - The following steps will OVERWRITE your existing MIDIMAP.CFG
  68.               configuration.  If you want to keep your existing
  69.               configuration, click on CANCEL and make a copy of MIDIMAP.CFG
  70.               before continuing the installation process.
  71.  
  72.    8. Select Sound Blaster MIDI Synthesizer and click on OK.
  73.  
  74.    9. Windows will ask if you want to use the current MIDIMAP.CFG or install
  75.       the new MIDIMAP.CFG - Select NEW and continue on.
  76.  
  77.   10. Windows will prompt you for the Sound Blaster I/O address.  The default
  78.       I/O address is 220H.  If you have changed the jumper on your card to
  79.       240H, then select 240H.
  80.  
  81.   11. Windows will ask if you want to restart your system.  Click on
  82.       DON'T RESTART, then repeat steps 4, 5, 6, and 7.
  83.  
  84.   12. Select Sound Blaster v1.5 or Sound Blaster v2.0 Wave and MIDI, depending
  85.       on which card you own (Quick way to tell:  The v2.0 has three 1/8" mini
  86.       jacks - Line In, Mic In, and Audio Out, and the v1.5 only has two 1/8"
  87.       jacks - Mic In and Audio Out).  Make your selection and click on OK.
  88.  
  89.   13. Windows will prompt you for the Sound Blaster I/O address, Interrupt, and
  90.       DMA channel. Choose the settings your card is set to and continue on.
  91.  
  92.   14. Windows will ask if you want to restart your system.  Click on
  93.       RESTART.  Windows will then restart.
  94.  
  95.  
  96. IV. What to do if the drivers don't install correctly
  97. -----------------------------------------------------
  98.  
  99.    If you are having problems installing the drivers, here are some things to
  100.    check before you call Technical Support.  Also, be sure to read the
  101.    "Important Notes" section below.
  102.  
  103. ** 1. If you installed Windows 3.1 using the "Express Installation,"  Windows
  104.       scanned your hard disk for programs to be installed.  As a result, older
  105.       versions of the Jukebox, and Mixer were installed if they were on your
  106.       hard disk at the time of installation.  Please remove these icons.  To do
  107.       this, click on the icon once to select it, then press the delete key.
  108.       Windows will ask you for confirmation.  Repeat for each icon.
  109.  
  110.    2. Check the size and date of all the driver files in the Windows SYSTEM
  111.       directory against the listing in the section "Diskette Contents".  Make
  112.       sure that the correct drivers have been copied to your hard disk.
  113.  
  114.    3. Open the Driver applet in Control panel.  You should at least have the
  115.       following driver names in the Installed Drivers list:
  116.  
  117.             Creative Sound Blaster _MIDI Synthesizer
  118.             Creative Sound Blaster 2.0 Wave and MIDI
  119.             MIDI Mapper
  120.             Timer
  121.             [MCI] MIDI Sequencer
  122.             [MCI] Sound
  123.  
  124.       If one or more of these drivers do not exist, you must install the
  125.       driver(s) using the Driver applet in Control Panel (See the Windows
  126.       manual for more details).
  127.  
  128.    4. Check your SYSTEM.INI by choosing RUN from the File menu of the Program
  129.       Manager, and typing SYSEDIT in the command line box.  Examine the
  130.       [drivers] and [sndblst.drv] sections.  They should look something like
  131.       this:
  132.  
  133.               [drivers]
  134.               Timer=timer.drv
  135.               Midimapper=midimap.drv
  136.               MIDI=sbfm.drv
  137.               Wave=sb20snd.drv
  138.               MIDI1=sb20snd.drv
  139.  
  140.               [sndblst.drv]

  143.               dmachannel=1

  145.    5. If Windows refuses to install a device driver or you get the error
  146.       message "Device not found" when playing a Wave or MIDI file, be sure
  147.       you have the following settings in the [mci] section of SYSTEM.INI
  148.  
  149.               [mci]
  150.               WaveAudio=mciwave.drv
  151.               Sequencer=mciseq.drv
  152.  
  153.       If one or more of these do not exist, you must install the driver(s)
  154.       using the Driver applet in Control Panel (See the Windows manual for
  155.       instructions).  Do not type in the entries into the SYSTEM.INI because
  156.       the files have to be installed into your SYSTEM directory by Windows.

  159. V. If you upgraded from Windows 3.0 to Windows 3.1
  160. --------------------------------------------------
  161.  
  162.    If you upgraded an existing copy of Windows 3.0 or Windows 3.0 with
  163.    Multimedia Extensions to Windows 3.1, here are some special notes to
  164.    consider.
  165.  
  166.    1. If you have a line which reads "device=vsbd.386" in the [386Enh] section
  167.       of SYSTEM.INI, please delete it.  This is an old driver which has been
  168.       replaced by VSBPD.386.  The new driver will not work correctly until this
  169.       line is removed.
  170.  
  171.    2. After installing Windows 3.1, verify that the latest SBFM.DRV and
  172.       SB15SND.DRV (or SB20SND.DRV for Sound Blaster 2.0) have been copied
  173.       to your hard disk.  You can delete any older versions that you find in
  174.       your system.

  177. VI. Important notes
  178. -------------------

  183.    1. The drivers found in the file CREATE.EXE on Microsoft's BBS and in the
  184.       Microsoft Forum on CompuServe are not the latest drivers for Windows 3.1
  185.       and may not work properly.  Please do not use them.
  186.  
  187.    2. The drivers that are included with the Windows 3.1 Resource Kit are not
  188.       the lastest drivers and may not work properly.  Please do not use them.
  189.  
  190.    3. We are including drivers that make use of Device Virtualization.  These
  191.       drivers will allow DOS Apps that use the Sound Blaster to run in Enhanced
  192.       Mode.
  193.  
  194.       Please make sure that a line reading "device=vsbpd.386" exists under the
  195.       [386Enh] section in your SYSTEM.INI.  If you have a line which reads
  196.       "device=vsbd.386", please delete it.  Also, make sure the file VSBPD.386
  197.       is in your Windows SYSTEM directory.  If it is not, copy it from the
  198.       Drivers Disk.
  199.  
  200.    4. The Windows 3.1 drivers can now be used in both Windows 3.0 with
  201.       Multimedia extensions as well as Windows 3.1.  They will check the
  202.       Windows version and use the correct Sound Blaster section name to access
  203.       the settings in the SYSTEM.INI.
  204.  
  205.    5. A MIDI-MAP has been created to make use of the SBFM.DRV, please use the
  206.       MIDI MAPPER icon under Control Panel to customize it to your requirements.
  207.  
  208.       Under Windows 3.1, MIDI channel 10 is referenced as the drum channel.
  209.       If you are having problems with the FM synth not sounding "right", try
  210.       modifying the configuration with the MIDI Mapper.
  211.
