- Q: Where can I find the latest version of SIDPLAY ?
-
- A: The following site is the 'European C64 Emulation Archive'. It is supposed
- to keep the latest version soon after it has been released:
-
- Norway frodo.hiof.no 156.36.33.4 pub/c64/sidmusic/
-
-
- The latest SIDPLAY version should be available via FTP at the following
- sites first, filename will be 'sidpl???.*':
-
- Germany ftp.uni-hamburg.de pub/dos/incoming/
- pub/incoming/
- Germany ftp.econ.uni-hamburg.de incoming/
-
- If there is no later version than you already have, NO newer one
- has been released. Please DON'T expect the package to move to a
- different directory after short time !
-
- A: If you didn't get SIDPLAY via InterNet, expect to find a new version at
- your usual distribution site.

- Summary: Extracting the NemeSIDs-Collection (from AmiNet)
- Keywords: AMIGA, LHA archives, double filenames, sidtunes
-
- Always use 'LHA x -a -m2' to extract the files from the LHA archives.
- While option '-a' allows files with any attributes to be extracted, option
- '-m2' enables renaming of double filenames. The reason for the double
- filenames is cutting long filenames from the AmigaDOS file-system to the
- limited length of the (MS-)DOS file-system.
-
- When the extraction is completed you find a lot of files named 'psid.*' in
- each directory. Caution, a few files are 'read only' ! You will have to
- change their file attribute manually. Since SIDPLAY only accepts '*.dat'
- music files (plus additional hidden song description files '*.sid' or
- '*.inf') you have to use the 'psid2dat.exe' utility with option '+' to build
- usable filenames automatically.
-
- 4DOS users may like to make use of the 'Psid EXtracting utility'. The script
- and its documentation reside in the \TOOLS directory of the SIDPLAY package.
-
- Experienced users of SIDPLAY and PlaySID may want to do some optional (!)
- conversion, to work with the tunes, e.g. change song info or optimize the
- ripped data. They are advised to read the chapters 4+5 of 'sidplay.doc'.

- Q: When I downloaded the song archives, I found out that I can't extract the
- ".INF" files from the ".LHA" files. Apparently when I use DOS LHA to
- extract them, they can't handle the fact that the files have a four
- character extension (".INFO"). How can I get the INF files out of the
- LHA files ?
-
- A: Use 'LHA x -a -m2' to extract the files from the LHA archives. When the
- extraction is completed you don't have "convert" any files for use with
- SIDPLAY. But before proceeding, make sure what types of files the archive
- contained. This is necessary to successfully complete the following
- renaming procedure:
-
- 1) If there exist files '*.inf' (inside archive '*.info'), there are also
- corresponding files '*'. Rename the files '*' to '*.dat' ! Now SIDPLAY
- will list those files and will automatically make use of the hidden
- '*.inf' files.
-
- 2) If there don't exist files '*.inf' (inside archive '*.info'), you can
- either rename all files to '*.dat' or proceed like described in the
- previous chapter about the NemeSIDs-Collection.
-
- The 'sidplay.doc' file covers the different file types, the occurence of
- different file types inside archives and the conversion procedure quite
- well in my opinion.

-
- Q: Is there a place where the AMIGA archives are extracted and ready for
- PC/DOS users to use ?
-
- A: Also check out frodo.hiof.no via FTP. At least there are archives which
- contain short filenames and can easily be extracted.

- Q: I have a 386SX-20 CPU and a Sound Blaster Pro. SIDPLAY seems to work fine,
- but the music pauses every average second or even hangs the computer !
-
- A: You have to lower the sample mixing frequency using the /f parameter,
- because your CPU is too slow to process enough samples in the right time.

- Q: I have a 386SX-20 CPU and a Gravis Ultrasound. SIDPLAY seems to work fine,
- but the music pauses every average second or even hangs the computer !
-
- A: You have to lower the sample mixing frequency using the /f parameter,
- because your CPU is too slow to process enough samples in the right time.
- There is only SB like GUS support in implemented in SIDPLAY. That means, the
- program does not take advantage of special GUS capabilities.
-
- A: I would support the GUS natively, if I own one myself or if somebody lends
- it to me. I appreciate donations very much - please think about sending me
- some money. Imagine every user who asks me about GUS support would send me a
- small amount, this could give me the possibility to purchase the card
- myself.
-
- Besides, the whole emulator concept is based on the hardware capabilities
- of the socalled 'standard' soundcards (e.g. SB or PAS) which only have
- one digital audio channel. Supporting GUS natively would not only mean adapting
- the routines to the different GUS hardware but also developing new
- algorithms. All in all, SID emulation on a GUS should be a lot easier than
- on one channel cards !

- If you want me to support special features of any new soundcard in

- program different sound related utilities acting as some valueable

- fetch my address from the file 'sidplay.doc' and providing either the
- programming reference and/or the soundcard itself.
