- SETUP USING CONFIG.EXE:
- ----------------------
-
- Using HOT.EXE is a straight forward intuitive process. However, prior to
- using the program, YOU MUST RUN THE CONFIG PROGRAM (only once) so that
- HOT.EXE will recognize and use your sound card properly. Follow these easy
- steps:
-
- After installing the program as outlined above, follow these steps: At the
- DOS prompt, type "CONFIG" and press ENTER. Step through each menu
- selection until all choices are completed, i.e. identify your sound card
- from the available choices. Most compatible sound cards will emulate the
- Sound Blaster Pro. If you are not sure, make your selection and use the
- TEST option to determine success or failure. Once your have made all of
- your selections, select "SAVE..." and press ENTER. A configuration file
- will be created in the current directory. This configuration file, along
- with one of the included ".MSE" files are BOTH required in order for
- HOT.EXE to run.
-
- ---------------
- (F)iles Command: - Select Music Files:
- ---------------
-
- NOTE: YOU MUST "TAG" A FILE IN ORDER TO PLAY IT. IF NO FILES ARE TAGGED IN
- THE FILE SELECTION WINDOW, PRESSING ENTER OR ESCAPE WILL RETURN TO THE MAIN
- PROGRAM SCREEN WITH NO MUSIC SELECTED.
-
- YOU MAY NOT TAG MORE THAN 5 FILES IN THE SHAREWARE VERSION. (The
- registered version supports 500+ files and allows play from a ZIP file.)
-
- To Tag a selection, simply use the SPACEBAR when the filename is
- highlighted. You may press the SPACEBAR again to Un-Tag the filename. Use
- Ctrl + Left Arrow to Tag ALL filenames or Ctrl + Right Arrow to Un-Tag ALL
- filenames.
-
- Pressing RETURN or the RIGHT BUTTON after selecting files will immediately
- begin music play. If you press ESCape after making a selection(s), the
- selected file(s) will be abandoned and you will be returned to the main
- menu.
-
- Sorting is easy, just pick a number (as follows). The number represents
- the position of the area to sort on:
-
- 1 = Sort by file Name.
- 2= Sort by file Extension.
- 3 = Sort by file Size.
- 4 = Sort by file Date.
- 5 = Sort by file Time.
-
- You may press ALT-R to allow the above keys to perform a REVERSE sort.
- Press ALT-R and then use any of the above sort keys (1, 2, 3, 4 or 5).
-
- -------------
- COMMAND KEYS:
- -------------
-
- To start HOTCAKES , simply type "HOT" and press ENTER. After HOTCAKES has
- found and used the information contained in the Configuration File, it is
- ready for any of the following commands (press the first letter of the
- command, or click on the highlighted letter of the command):
-

- be presented for selection. Move the cursor (or mouse) up or down
- to navigate. Select a highlighted file by pressing the SPACEBAR.
- Pressing the SPACEBAR again will Un-select it. Press ENTER to
- begin play after making your selections.
-

-
- --------
- PROBLEMS:
- --------
-
- The shareware version of HOTCAKES will not play more than five (5) music
- files. This is a planned limitation to encourage registration.
-
- HOTCAKES will load required data from HOT!01.EXE and HOT!02.DAT
- "on-the-fly", so make sure that these files are in the same directory as
- HOTCAKES.EXE and your configuration files.
-
- The minimum files required to run HOTCAKES are:
-
- HOT.EXE - Executable program
- HOT!01.EXE - Support file
- HOT!02.DAT - Support file
- MSE.CFG - File created after you run CONFIG.EXE
- ?.MSE - Sound engine that supports your sound card (ie, SBPRO.MSE)
- ..and probably a music file or two.
-
- If you experience "Out of memory" problems after selecting a mixed group of
- songs to play, this indicate's that not enough Conventional and/or Expanded
- Memory is available. Some of your selections may play OK before this error
- occurs, but larger files will cause a memory error. When this type of
- error occurs, it often causes the remaining files not to play even though
- they should fit into available memory. Play will be stopped if HOTCAKES
- detects 5 Out-of-memory errors.
-
- If an "Out of memory" error occurs after changing directories from the DOS
- (Shell) option and attempting to play music, exit the program completely
- and restart it.
-
- --------------
- ERROR MESSAGES:
- --------------
-
- Hopefully you will not experience an error messages while using HOTCAKES.
- But in the event that you do, here's what they mean:
-
- "Module is corrupt" - The music file is corrupt.
- "Could not autodetect module type" - Music type not supported.
- "Bad format ID" - Similar to above
- "Out of memory" - Conventional and/or EXPANDED memory.
- "Cannot unpack samples" - Conversion difficulties.
- "AdLib samples not supported" - Just what is says.
- "Unknown Load Error:" - Could not determine error.
- "Compressed file failure" - PKUNZIP.EXE failed.
- "No sound selected in CONFIG etc..." - You did not run CONFIG before using
- HOTCAKES (for the first time), or you
- did not SAVE your selections in the
- CONFIG program.
- "Cannot find HOT???.???" - HOTCAKES cannot run if it can't find
- it's support files as explained above.
- directory.
-
- Screen garbage or other mysterious errors may be an indication that
- HOT!02.DAT has become corrupted. Simply reload a good copy from your
- original disk.
-
- NOTE TO TROPEZ OWNERS: If you experience a lack of sound, try using the
- Tropez Mixer TZACMIX (TROPEZ\DOSAPPS\TZACMIX)
- and enter the following command:
-
- TZACMIX W=80 (or 100 for full volume)
-
- Development system: 486-33, Tropez sound card, BSR 3-way speakers, Yamaha
- sub-woofer. Programming Compiler: QuickBasic V4.5
- and the BWSB Library from Edward Schlunder.
