  8. Coda  Music  Technology  (the  makers  of  Finale  music  notation 
  9. software)  just  announced that they have acquired the  technology 
  10. necessary  to  convert  scanned  images  of  printed  music   into 
  11. computer-based music notation!   This acquisition is the result of 
  12. an  agreement between Coda and the University of Surrey in London, 
  13. where the technology was developed by Dr. Nicholas Carter.

  15. Dr. Carter has developed an algorithm that allows printed music to 
  16. be scanned on any industry-standard scanner,  saved in TIFF format 
  17. and  then converted with  notes,  rests,  key  signatures,  slurs, 
  18. articulations  and more.   With the upcoming availability of  this 
  19. new  technology,  Finale users will gain a highly efficient method 
  20. of note entry.

  22. Coda plans to offer a "scanning service bureau" as the first  form 
  23. of  delivering  this technology to the  marketplace.   Clients  of 
  24. Coda's  scanning  service will send in printed music  and  receive 
  25. electronic  Finale  files  in  return.   This  service  should  be 
  26. available in the first half of 1993.
  27. Later,  a  software package for converting scanned music to Finale 
  28. formate will be offered as an options add-on to Finale.   A stand-
  29. alone scanning application product is also planned.
