- Additional Bank Switching Comments
- (Lessons Learned)
- by Mike Norman (75056,2742)
-
- I've got a few extra comments on the excellent writeup on bank switching
- by John Dorff (see SWBANK.TXT in this section), after some playing around
- with Cakewalk and Vienna, and lots of trial and error.
-
- - In order to have "User Custom Synth" listed as one of the options in
- the "Synth Bank" dialog box in AWE control (see page 4-8 of the "Getting
- Started" manual), you must have a user bank file called "synthusr.sbk"
- in your sfbank directory. This bank file, of course, can be created
- and saved with Vienna.
-
- - The dialog box called "Synth Bank" sets the synthesizer mode for the AWE.
- This is the default synthesizer that is used whenever a midi file is
- first started. You select the mode by clicking on the name, then
- pressing on the "Set" button. This will also clear memory of any synth
- banks not now needed, other than user banks. If "User Custom Synth" is
- one of the options listed (see the above paragraph) you can, of course,
- make it the default as well. Note - When you configure patch names from
- within Cakewalk, you are simply changing the names for each patch, not
- the synthesizer mode. See the patch.ini file in the Cakewalk directory
- for notes on how to add patch names for the Custom User Synthesizer to
- the lists.
-
- - User banks are additional sounds that can be entered (in my case, by
- Vienna) in any of 128 banks, or areas. The Roland GS Synthesizer
- emulation mode also uses some of these banks, numbers 0-9, as indicated
- in John Dorff's article, and on page G-4 to G-5 of "Getting Started".
- The GS mode use of these banks is not indicated in the AWE Control
- User Bank dialog box - I guess you just have to know it. In any case,
- if you decide to use any of these banks while in the GS mode, your banks
- will take priority. Also, your banks may be used in any synthesizer
- mode, not just GS, and GS is (apparently) the only preset synthesizer
- mode that uses these banks.
-
- - To associate a user sound bank file with a bank number, simply display
- the bank number in the "User Bank" dialog box in AWE Control, then
- double click the file name in the File Name dialog box (after selecting
- the proper directory, as required). To clear the bank, press the Clear
- button. Fortunately, the sound RAM will keep up with all of this.
-
- - To use your bank sounds in a midi file, follow the instructions in John
- Dorff's article, substituting your bank number for the one he uses
- (number 8) in the article. Note - you must issue a patch change after
- each Control 0 command, even if you're not changing patches, to keep the
- synthesizer from getting confused (don't ask me why). Also, judicious use
- of the panic button while programming the file is a good idea (before
- each replay, for instance).
-
- I hope some of the above helps, and doesn't add to the confusion.
-
- Finally, if Creative Labs is listening, it sure would be nice to have some
- of the detailed info (like the above) on your excellent product available
- on an other than word of mouth or trial and error basis. While I'm wishing,
- a short, concise basic tutorial on midi essentials would be nice, as well.
