-
- 1. Program Release Information
-
- This documentation accompanies TEST DRIVE release of Pipx, an ODI
- workstation driver which provides convenient parallel port networking
- for Netware Lite and other ODI-capable network software. Pipx will
- also support NDIS software, such as Windows for Workgroups, through
- the ODINSUP shim, with some limitations.
-
- The TEST DRIVE release allows you to use Pipx for EVALUATION PURPOSES
- ONLY for a LIMITED PERIOD OF TIME and includes certain features
- which will help you remember you are using evaluation software which
- is subject to a limited license agreement.
-
- Pipx brings the extreme convenience and simplicity of parallel port
- networking to the ODI environment. Pipx is part of family of parallel
- port networking drivers; version for NDIS and Packet Driver interfaces
- will be released in the near future.
-
- Pipx is different from other parallel port connectivity products:
-
- - it allows you to use first-class networking software
- - it allows integrated networking with Ethernet and Token Ring
- - it supports all types of ports and four types of cables
- - it offers low-end or high-end performance choices
-

- 3. License Agreement
-
- Your right to use this program is governed by your acceptance of
- the terms and conditions stated in the License Agreement which is
- set forth in the files License.Doc and Pipx.Doc.
-
- We offer inexpensive licensing arrangements for those vendors who
- would like to include Pipx or Parallel in their distributed software.
-
- 4. Limitations of the Test Drive release
-
- The test drive release has a number of limitations which are not
- present in the standard release.
-
- a. The documentation has been abbreviated [ PIPX.DOC ]
- b. TURBO support is omitted
- c. A reminder screen is present (NagWare)
- d. Certain LIGHTS functions are omitted
- e. The automatic menu configuration program is omitted [ PSETUP.EXE ]
- f. The driver will only operate for a limited period of time
- g. Technical support is available via Compuserve (76640,203)
-
-
- 5. Program Operation
-
- Pipx is a TSR program which provides an ODI software interface which
- supports IPX or other protocols operating over parallel port cable
- connections between two PC systems.
-
- Pipx supports all types of parallel ports and (currently) three types
- of parallel port cable connections: 4BIT, 8BIT, and TURBO.
-
- The 4BIT cable type works with all ports and is laplink-compatible
-
- The 8BIT cable type works only with 8BIT ports and is 50% faster
-
- The TURBO cable type works with all ports and is extremely fast.
- TURBO cables can achieve transfer rates of up to 800 Kbytes/sec
- between EPP ports, which translates into NW Lite Perform3 results
- ranging up to 200 Kbytes/sec.
-
- 6. Pipx Configuration
-
- a. Netware Lite Clients and Servers
-
- Installing: SHARE ; load first - not unloadable
- LSL
- PIPX
- IPXODI
- SERVER ; [optional]
- CLIENT
- NET LOGIN username
-
- Optional Removal: CLIENT U ; this requires that you
- SERVER U ; have NOT installed any
- IPXODI U ; other TSR programs above
- PIPX U ; any of these drivers
- LSL U
-
- b. Windows for Workgroups and Lan Manager
-
- Pipx may be also used with the ODINSUP driver provided in the
- Novell DOSUP6.ZIP workstation update available on Compuserv.
- The ODINSUP driver provides an NDIS interface working through
- the Pipx driver. This allows you to run LanMan workstation
- software and WorkGroups for Windows through Pipx if desired.
-
- e. Using EPLANODI with Other Protocols
-
- Refer to the protocol documentation. Pipx is a fully
- compatible ODI driver with "version 1.2 LSL capability".
-
- 7. Program Parameters (in the NET.CFG file)
-
- When you run PIPX, either at the DOS command line or from a
- batch file, it looks for a NET.CFG file and scans it for parameters
- which may be used to control various features. The parameters are
- placed in the LINK DRIVER PIPX section of NET.CFG.
-
- PORT 3BC, 378, or 278 [ required ]
-
- INT 5 or 7 [ required ]
-
- CABLE 4BIT, 8BIT, or TURBO [ required ]
-
- NODE ADDRESS 12 hex digits [ required ]
-
- may be used to override the adapter's Node Address
- with a locally administered Ethernet address.
-
- Note: Be sure you use different addresses on each
- Pipx station, otherwise Pipx will not operate
-
- LIGHTS Transient or Persistent [ optional ]
-
- The Display Lites are five characters displayed
- in the upper right hand corner of the display - only
- when the display is in a Text mode. It is not active
- in any graphics mode, and has no effect on graphics
- mode programs like Windows. There is a slight (5%)
- performance penalty for using the Display Lites.
-
- In Persistent Mode, the display is not cleared and
- the state of the Lites reflects the last state.
-
- In Transient Mode, the display is auto-cleared and
- the state of the Lites reflects the current state.
-
- The meaning of the Display Lites is:
-
- +---------------- ISR State
- | +------------- Timeout State
- | | +---------- Rxcv State
- | | | +------- Txmit State
- | | | | +---- Driver State
- V V V V V
-
- I ISR is active
- R ISR is serving Rx Complete
- T ISR is serving Tx Complete
- A ISR is initiating a queued Txmit
- i ISR is inactive
- O a Tx Timeout is being handled
- F a forced interrupt has been handled
- K a timed out Tx is being aborted
- T a queued Txmit is being initiated
- R Rx in progress
- r Rx complete
