- INSULTS
- We mentioned CABRóN, the kind of word men are
- always calling their friends in mock insult (as
- well as applying in genuine insult). Next most
- common would be BUEY, a fairly harmless word
- meaning "ox." But for some reason when pronounced
- as GUEY or WEY (as it often is), it becomes a
- harsher word, not for polite company but the
- kind of word with which many street types end
- every phrase.
-
- PENDEJO is a very Mexican expletive, a poorly
- defined synonym for "jerk" (but originally coming
- from "pubic hair") and not-acceptable in polite
- company. PENDEJOS are known for committing
- PENDEJADAS. All of these words are "unisex."
-
- Synonyms for "stupid" abound and all can be
- converted to the desired gender: among them are
- the easily recognizable CRéTINO, IDIOTA, IMBéCIL
- (a "unisex" word), and ESTúPIDO. Be careful, this
- is stronger in Spanish than in English and many
- Mexicans, particularly women, don't like being
- called ESTúPIDA even in fun. TONTO (fool), MENSO
- (female is MENSA, much to the chagrin of members
- of the IQ group), and JETóN are a few more. BABOSO
- is a good one, frequently heard, and comes from a
- root meaning "to drool" and is therefore a
- drooling idiot.
-
- Noteworthy is the Spanish construction by which
- POR is used to mean "because of" or "on account
- of." Playful constructions we have heard include:
- ME ENCARCELARON POR FEO (they locked me up for
- being ugly).
- FRACASé POR PENDEJO (I failed because I was a
- dumb jerk).
- TOMA, POR EGOíSTA (take this for being selfish).
- SE BUSCA POR TONTO (wanted for stupidity).
