- Thank you for your response to XWORD!
-
- I know it's been a long time since I promised an update, but many
- people responded, and few paid. Therefore, I couldn't justify a
- lot of work on the project since I had many demands as a part of
- regular consulting duties to major clients throughout the country
- who probably have connections that have knowledge of cement over-
- shoes. Well, maybe not, but at least, they'd get a little peevy
- if I missed all my deadlines.
-
- However, the XWORD 2.0 program is finally at a stage where it can
- be used by a lot of people. There is now a printer set up screen.
-
- First try either the Epson FX/RX or the Juki/IBM Graphics Printer mode
- and set up your printer to emulate an IBM Graphics Printer for your
- best bet. You can also choose from the list of densities on the
- set up screen: some printers have only one or two densities, and
- others have as many as five or more. If one density doesn't work
- on your IBM compatible printer, try another density... one or two
- that I've set up may work. My Juki IBM Compatible can print on
- all four densities I've set up.
-
- I have included several printer definitions, but have only been able
- to test it on an EPSON, an IBM Graphics Printer, and a few IBM
- Graphics Printer compatibles. There is no problem there, but I
- cannot vouch for the printing quality or ability on a CITOH or
- on an OKIDATA. I did my best without a printer, so if you have
- terrible problems, please feel free to play with the numbers yourself
- until you get some results. If you simply can't get an OKI or
- such printer to print, then please write to me and I'll try to
- work with you until we can get it to print properly.
-
- The Toshiba set up, for example, probably won't even come close
- to working, but I included it because it at least has some of
- the codes to work from. I don't have much hope for the Laserjet,
- either, but what the heck.
-
- Here are a few hints, however: Even though I've tried to include
- a set up for an HP Laserjet, I have gotten a Laserjet to work with
- the program by putting the HP in IBM Graphics Printer emulation mode.
- I haven't yet tried the HP setup itself. The rule of thumb is,
- if your printer can emulate an IBM Graphics Printer, then do it!
-
- If you have problems with the print head not advancing, or not
- returning to the left, then change the value of "End Grph Line"
- to 10, which is a line feed. This will issue a line feed after
- each graphics line is sent to the printer. If that doesn't solve
- the problem, then try setting the "CR Ea Line" to 'YES' so that
- a carriage return is sent after each graphics line. Don't ask
- me why, but many IBM GP compatible printers differ in their need
- for a line feed and/or carriage return at the end of the line.
- That should tell you something about just how "compatible" printers
- really are.
-
- A few more features are in the works...a color customizer (the
- numbers are in xconfig.dat for you hackers), and a few more
- ease of use features. Finally, I will be working on speeding up
- the program. It zips along at light speed on my 80386 machine,
- but slugs along at snails pace on my 8086. That's the sacrifice
- for ease of use and lotsa colors, I guess, but I'll throw in a
- few assembly subroutines, and maybe version 2.1 will run faster.
-
- I hope you all can use this program and get a lot of fun out of
- it. Please be patient if you write to me...Counterpoint is a
- small but expanding company that requires more time than I have
- to give, not even including fun projects like these.
-
- Thanks for responding...
