- What is Discipline?
-
- Discipline may not be what you think it is!
-
- MANY PEOPLE THINK DISCIPLINE IS JUST PUNISHMENT
-
- When we discipline a child we often are doing
- something that lets the child know that we
- are displeased with something that happened
- and do not what it to happen again.
-
-
-
-
- DISCIPLINE IS MORE THAN PUNISHMENT!
-
- Discipline has a positive side as well--
-
- When a child is presented with a difficult
- task or confronted with a real temptation
- and sticks to the task or fails to give in
- to the temptation, we say they have discipline.

- DISCIPLINE IMPLIES THAT BEHAVIOR IS
- UNDER CONTROL
-
- When we Discipline a child we are attempting to
- bring the child's behavior under control, either';
- his/hers or our own. When the child's behavior ';
- is under control, then it is fair to describe ';
- the child as well disciplined. ';

- What is Discipline? ';
- ';
- Looking at Discipline in this way we are faced ';
- with having to define when behavior is under ';
- control and when it is not. ';
- ';
- In general, we do that by defining the limits of';
- what is acceptable under the circumstances and ';
- what is not. If the child keeps his/her behavior';
- within these limits, everything is okay. ';

-
- What is Discipline? ';
- ';
- To give the child a fair chance to learn what is';
- acceptable under the circumstances and to have ';
- an opportunity to keep behavior within these ';
- limits we must-- ';
- ';èMake it clear what is acceptable * Help him/her ';
- understand the circumstances * Make sure that it';
- possible to do it * Give them a reason to do it.';

- What is Discipline? ';
- ';
- We make clear to a child that some things are ';
- are acceptable and some things are not by: ';
- ';
- TELLING THEM WHAT WE WANT OR EXPECT ';
- and ';
- BY SHOWING THEM BY WHAT WE DO ';
- ';
- Of the two, the force of example is the greater.';

- What is Discipline? ';
- ';
- We help a child to understand circumstances by: ';
- ';
- Explaining what is going on and the difference ';
- it makes in terms of what he/she has to do. ';
- ';
- By using what actually happened to the child and';
- helping them to figure out what made things ';
- go right or wrong in that case. ';

-
- What is Discipline? ';
- ';
- We make sure that it is possible for a child to ';
- keep his/her behavior within the limits by: ';
- ';
- o Knowing what he/she can do or can't do';
- o Avoid placing him/her in a situation ';
- that is more that he/she can handle ';
- o Helping him/her to draw on strengths ';
- and avoid the any personal weakness ';

-
- What is Discipline? ';
- ';
- We provide a child with a reason to keep his/her';
- behavior within the limits by: ';
- ';
- Providing him/her with good things (rewards) if ';
- he/she keeps his/her behavior within the limits ';
- and by providing unpleasant consequences when ';
- the child's behavior goes outside of the limits ';
- of what is acceptable. ';

-
- What is Discipline? ';
- ';èDiscipline is the ability to keep behavior under';
- control. If behavior is under the control of ';
- external forces, it is maintained by the rewards';
- or punishments we receive from others. ';
- ';
- If the behavior is under the control of internal';
- forces, the child is self-disciplined and guided';
- by an inner sense of what is acceptable. ';
- No More ';
