- The information I need at this time consists '
- of your opinions on childhood and children. I '
- also have to get a sense of how you would like '
- your child to turn out. '
- '
- To get this information, I will first display '
- 10 statements about childhood and ask you how '
- much you agree with each of them. I will then '
- check to see if I got it right and give you a '
- chance to correct any mistakes I made. '
- '
- Then, I will show you nine descriptions of '
- children and ask you how pleased you would be '
- if your child turned out that way. There are '
- no right or wrong choices, so be honest. '
- '
- The information I need at this time consists '
- of how you see yourself, and how you would '
- describe your child. '
- '
- '
- To get this information, I will first display '
- 19 pairs of words and ask you to rank yourself '
- on a scale with these words on the two extremes. '
- '
- Then, I will display 19 pairs of words along '
- with a scale and ask you to rank your child '
- along the scale. This will allow me to get to '
- know you and your child a little better before '
- saying anything. Remember that your first im- '
- pression is often the best when using scales. '
- '
- Now, I need information about your opinions on '
- various types of rewards and punishments that '
- parents use effectively. Here, I am trying to '
- get a sense of what will work for you and '
- your child. '
- '
- To do this, I will show you 10 different types '
- of rewards and ask you how comfortable you would '
- be using each of them. I will check out my '
- understanding and give you a chance to change '
- your response if you wish. '
- '
- Then, I will repeat the process using 10 des- '
- criptions of punishments pearents use to see '
- what you are comfortable with. '
