- 1. Recent Changes and Additions
-
- - Installation
-
- The Mighty Math program files are now archived in one file,
- MATH.ZIP. The PKUNZIP program is provided on the distribution
- disk; it is necessary for de-archiving the files.
-
- The INSTALL program is provided to automate the process of
- de-archiving and copying the files to a hard disk or working
- floppy disk. Installation can be done manually, using PKUNZIP
- directly. See the READ.ME file (separate from this README.DOC
- file) for instructions.
-
- - PianoMan music
-
- When you score in the top 10 in Test mode, a tune will be
- played. The program randomly selects one of 5 tunes, which are
- stored on the disk in the files 1.EXE, 2.EXE, etc. A sixth tune,
- in the file PRELUDIO.EXE, is played if you make the top 10 by
- scoring 9500 or better. All the tunes were created with the
- PianoMan program by Neil Rubenking.
-
- You can use PianoMan to change these tunes and create
- others. To get Mighty Math to play your new tunes, substitute
- them for the existing tunes by renaming them 1.EXE, 2.EXE, etc.,
- or PRELUDIO.EXE, and putting them in the Mighty Math directory in
- place of the old ones.
-
- The music feature is available only in the registered
- version of Mighty Math.
-
- PianoMan is a ShareWare program and may be found on many
- BBS systems, including CompuServe. The registered version of the
- program can be obtained from Support Group Inc., P. O. Box 1577,
- Baltimore, MD 21203 or by calling 800/USA-GROUP. The last time I
- looked, the price was $25.00.
-
- - Quick Study Demo
-
- To run the Quick Study Demo, enter DEMO at the DOS prompt.
- The files DEMO.BAT, RDEMO2.EXE, and STUDY.DBD must be present in
- your current directory for the Demo to run.
-
- - Scoring
-
- The Results screen (which displays your score after a Play
- session) has been revised to more clearly show the Basic Score
- and Bonuses, and how the Net Score was computed.
-
- - Options
-
- The options that affect bonuses (Range and Wrong Allowed)
- have been grouped together on the Options menu.
-
- The "Maximize" item has been added to the Options menu.
- Selecting this option may change the values of the following
- Option settings: First Table, Last Table, Range, and Wrong
- Allowed. Selecting Maximize the first time sets these options to
- their most difficult values; for example, Range would be set to
- 10, and Wrong Allowed 0. When the values have been maximized,
- the word "Hard" will appear to the right of the Maximize item.
- When Maximize is set to "Hard", selecting Maximize again will
- toggle some of the "hard" settings to an easier value; for
- example, Range will be set to 5. Whenever Maximize is selected,
- it always sets the First Table to 2 and the Last Table to 12.
-
- - Miscellaneous
-
- The printer configuration filename has been changed from
- STUDY.PST to STUDY.PFG.
-
- Scroll bars have been added to the Help windows.
-
- Numerous internal changes have been made to speed up the
- program and reduce its size.
-
-
- 2. Program Description
-
- The purpose of Mighty Math is to help people--especially
- kids!--learn the times tables as quickly and enjoyably as
- possible. The program also helps with Division, Addition, and
- Subtraction tables; but the focus is on the basic Multiplication
- tables.
-
- The Play modes Practice and Test make up the heart of the
- program. Both work essentially the same, the main difference
- being that Test mode keeps track of the time you take, and scores
- your results. The program keeps track of the top 10 high scores.
- If you play in Test mode and score in the top 10, your name, the
- date, and your score are recorded on the high scores list.
-
- There are several Options you can set to control the way
- the Practice and Test modes work. You select the options you want
- to use, then start either Practice or Test mode. The main option
- you must select is the "Operator", -- the type of mathematical
- operator you want to work with: Multiplication (x), Addition (+),
- Subtraction (-), or Division (%).
-
- This README.DOC file gives basic information on how to start
- and quit the program. The complete manual is in the file
- MATH.DOC. There is an on-line Help system that gives plenty of
- help; to access the system, press the F1 function key from almost
- anywhere.
-
-
- 3. System Requirements
-
- - IBM PC computer, or 100% compatible
- - MS-DOS, 3.0 or later
- - 500K free RAM memory
- - Color video and hard disk helpful but not necessary
- - 640K free disk space
-
-
- 4. File list
-
- These are the files provided on the Mighty Math distribution
- disk. They are archived in the MATH.ZIP file.
-
- MATH.EXE Main Mighty Math program.
-
- MATH.OPL Menu library file.
-
- MATH.HLP Help System file.
-
- #.EXE The files 1.EXE thru 5.EXE and PRELUDIO.EXE
- PRELUDIO.EXE were created with the PianoMan program; they
- produce music that plays when a top score
- is achieved in Test Mode. If these files are
- missing, Mighty Math will work ok, but won't
- play the music.
-
- MATH.DOC The Mighty Math manual, in a disk file. You
- can print the manual with any word processor
- that handles plain ASCII text (most can), or
- use the DOS command "print math.doc". Make
- sure to have letter-size paper (8-1/2" by 11")
- in the printer. Use a word processor to do
- the printing if you have one, because the DOS
- Print command can't set margins or page length
- of the printed output. This file can be
- viewed from within the program, using the
- Help/Guide feature.
-
- MATH.SCO If this file is on the disk, it contains
- sample high scores. You can erase this
- file and start your own. If Mighty Math
- doesn't find a MATH.SCO file, it will create
- one in the current directory.
-
- MATH.CFG If this files is on the disk, it contains
- configuration data for setting program
- options. You can erase this file, or
- keep your own configuration with the
- Options/Keep command.
-
- MATH.PFG If this file is on the disk, it contains
- configuration data for setting Print
- options. You can erase this file, or
- keep your own Print configuration with
- the Print/Keep command.
-
- MATH.WRO If this file is on the disk, it contains
- a set of missed problems. You can erase
- the file; it will be overwritten when
- you use the Review/Keep option to save
- your own missed problems.
-
- MATH.BUG A plain ASCII text file to use for keeping
- notes of any bugs you may find in the program
- (I hope you never have to use it, but if you
- have to use it, please do so freely and send
- me a copy of your notes and comments.
-
- INVOICE.DOC Sample invoice form to use in registering the
- program or ordering additional copies. If
- you register, you'll receive an additional
- program, Quick Study, free.
-
- README.DOC This file
-
- DEMO.BAT, Files needed to run Quick Study demo. All 3
- STUDY.DBD, must be in the current directory. To run the
- RDEMO2.EXE demo, enter 'DEMO' at the DOS prompt.
-
-
- 5. Starting and Quitting the Program
-
- To start the program, go to the Drive and directory where
- the Mighty Math files are stored, enter "MATH" at the DOS
- prompt, and press ENTER.
-
- The first screen you see is the Title Screen; press ENTER
- to leave the Title screen and go to the main menu. Once you are
- in the main menu, you can get help by selecting the Help
- sub-menu. To exit the program, select Quit from the main menu.
-
-
