- | INSTALLATION INSTRUCTIONS FOR THE SPELLBOUND! SPELLING TUTOR |
- +==============================================================+
-
- SPECIAL NOTE: SPELLING TUTOR NOT DATE-LIMITED. NO "TIME WORMS"!
- This is the second release of version 2.10 as some persons
- mistook the phrase "time-worn device" (used as a joke in the
- previous versions of the Spelling Tutor) as "time-worm device" and
- thought that the Spelling Tutor would perform damage if used
- beyond the evaluation period. The text has now been removed. The
- shareware version of the Spelling Tutor will and ALWAYS HAS
- continued to work after the license period has expired while
- reminding you to please register.
-
- NEW IN VERSION 2.10!!!
-
- FILE MANAGER
- The ability of Teacher to Delete files has been added to the
- File Manager.
-
- LONGER WORD LENGTHS!
- Word lengths of up to 36 characters are now allowed which
- will enable tutoring on multiple word constructions such as those
- found in legal vocabularies. When the word length is set to
- greater than 15, however, the use of the "Smileys" are disabled
- as their movement would interfere with the display of long words.
- In addition, word search puzzle creation is disabled as well,
- when the maximum word length exceeds 15 characters, longer
- lengths could exceed puzzle dimensions.
-
- SHUFFLE THE ORDER OF WORDS WITHIN A SET!
- You can now shuffle the order of the words within a given
- set while the sets are displayed in the Spelling Tutor. This
- allows you to refresh the order in which the words are presented
- in cases where a set is used for tutoring multiple times.
-
- A SPECIAL GIFT FOR OUR REGISTERED USERS -- WORD SEARCH PUZZLES!!!
- To express our deep gratitude to those of you who have taken
- the time to register your copy of The Spelling Tutor, we wanted
- to give you something special that would in some measure, show
- our appreciation. For that reason, a wonderful new feature has
- been added to the Registered version of the Spelling Tutor. Now,
- each time you complete a word set, you can create and send to
- your printer a Word Search Puzzle consisting of each word from
- that set. This is a splendid way to reinforce the memory image
- of the word gained through working in the Tutor! In order to
- search for a word pattern in a grid of random letters, one must
- of necessity concentrate on the image of the word! Not only does
- it encourage the student to retain the image of the word, it does
- so in an entertaining and challenging way!
- If you register under Option 3, you will receive our new
- stand alone program, "The SPELLBOUND! Word Search Creator". (See
- SPELL.DOC for details.) This is in addition to the other
- premiums, The SPELLBOUND! Director, The BothSides Text Formatter,
- latest version of the Spelling Tutor, and the additional word
- lists. If you are only interested in ordering the Word Search
- Creator, it is available from SPELLBOUND! Software for the low
- price of just $15.00!
-
-
-
- AUTOMATIC REGISTRATION FOR PREVIOUS REGISTERED USERS!
- The INSTALL program will transfer your registration from
- your old version in the 2.xx series to the new copy when you
- install the new version over the old one. Do not delete your old
- installation as this will destroy your old registration.
- Be sure you have a backup of your registered version in case
- something should go wrong. The INSTALL program will make the
- transfer and delete all program files from the previous version.
- If you have modified your copies of SPELL.WDS, GRADE2.WDS, or
- GRADE3.WDS, be sure to make backups as the INSTALL program will
- overwrite these with the new versions.
- Your records, reports, default configuration etc. will all
- be preserved for use by the new version!
- We want you to possess a registered copy of the new Spelling
- Tutor without having to pay an additional upgrade fee! We REALLY
- appreciate your support!

-
- PREPARING THE INSTALL DISKETTE FOR INSTALLATION TO FLOPPY DISKS
- The INSTALL program requires the availability of
- "COMMAND.COM" (your command interpreter). If you do not have a
- hard drive or you boot your computer from drive A:, you will need
- to copy "COMMAND.COM" from your DOS "System" disk to the Spelling
- Tutor installation diskette before proceeding with the
- installation.
- If installing to floppies, COMMAND.COM will be automatically
- copied to your PROGRAM diskette by the INSTALL program as well,
- so that the transient portion of COMMAND.COM can be refreshed
- when terminating the Spelling Tutor. This prevents the message,
- "Insert disk with COMMAND.COM into drive A: and press any key".
- This will enable you to make use of an external editor in
- addition to allowing you to SHELL to Dos from within the program.
- If in rare circumstances you are not using COMMAND.COM,
- substitute the command interpreter for the operating system you
- are using. If you are unsure, type: "SET" at the Dos prompt and
- press ENTER. Look for the words: "COMSPEC=". The file name to
- the right of the equal sign is the name and path to your command
- interpreter.

-
- (1.) Format two blank floppy diskettes in the following manner:
- Place your DOS diskette containing FORMAT.COM into drive A:
- and a blank diskette into drive B:. Type "A:FORMAT B:" press
- ENTER. This will be your PROGRAM diskette. When it is
- finished, format another diskette in the same way. This
- will be your DATA diskette.
-
- (2.) Place the SPELLBOUND! diskette into drive A: and with the
- blank formatted PROGRAM diskette still in drive B:, do the
- following. Type: "A:INSTALL" press ENTER, read all of the
- instructions and follow the prompts. Both destination
- diskettes will be inserted into drive B: at the proper time.
-
- (3.) If everything went okay, your program is now ready to run!
- Place the PROGRAM diskette into drive A:, the DATA diskette
- (containing SPELL.WDS, SPELL.DOC, etc. into drive B:, type:
- "B:" (this will change you to drive B:) and then type:
- "SPELL" and press ENTER.

- +===============================================================+
-
- (1.) Place the distribution diskette into drive A: and do the
- following:
- a: Type: "A:INSTALL" (without quotes) press ENTER.
- b: Read all of the instructions, and follow the prompts. The
- INSTALL program can make some very necessary changes to
- AUTOEXEC.BAT and CONFIG.SYS for you, or you can make them
- yourself if you are leery of having installation programs
- mess with your system. If you choose to have the program do
- it for you, the original copies of your programs will be
- backed up first, so the changes are reversible. If you have
- the program make these changes for you, then skip step (2.).
-
- (2.) Add the program directory to your PATH environment variable
- in AUTOEXEC.BAT or at the DOS prompt. If you already have a
- PATH statement in AUTOEXEC.BAT, then append a semicolon
- before appending the directory. Example: PATH
- C:\DOS;C:\UTIL;C:\WP;C:\SPELL If there is no PATH statement
- in your AUTOEXEC.BAT file, then you must enter the
- following: (Assuming the PROGRAM files were installed in
- "C:\SPELL") PATH C:\SPELL The PATH environment variable
- tells DOS where to search for commands it cannot find in the
- current directory. When you type "SPELL" from the DATA
- directory, DOS will not be able to find SPELL.EXE in the
- current directory. It will look through the directories
- listed in the PATH statement.
-
- IMPORTANT! If you have a hard drive system with a single
- High density drive, you will first have to install to a
- single directory on your hard drive, and then copy all the
- files from that directory to the diskette.
-

-
- To start The Spelling Tutor, make the DATA directory your
- current directory. For example, if the DATA directory were
- C:\SPELL\CLASSONE, you would type: "C:" press ENTER and then "CD
- \SPELL\CLASSONE" press ENTER. When you have done this, type:
- "SPELL" press ENTER, and the program will begin.
- In your first session you will be presented with a couple of
- questions. The first is whether students will have access to
- functions which allow access to files or to the operating system.
- The other is whether you would like password protection so that
- students may only view their own records. Once installation is
- finished, the only person who will be able to change these
- settings is the person who logs on as "TEACHER". TEACHER must
- always enter a password to gain entrance. If a student were
- allowed to log in as teacher, he would be able to view other
- students' passwords, print out reports of their progress
- etcetera, so you may not disable password protection for the
- TEACHER. To change these initial settings at any time:
-
- (1.) Log in as TEACHER, and enter your password.
- (2.) Press ESC while at the MAIN MENU
- (3.) Key in "DEFAULT", then enter your "TEACHER" password again.
- (4.) While logged in as "DEFAULT", set up the configuration as
- you wish each new student to be configured the first time
- on. You may even run the Spelling Tutor and change the
- colors there. (Just press F1 in Spelling Tutor to see how
- to do this.)
- (5.) When the configuration is complete, either press F10 to quit
- or return to the Login screen and log in under your own name
- or "Teacher".
-
- The configuration you create as default is saved to
- DEFAULT.CFG in the PROGRAM directory. This will be the initial
- configuration each student will receive the first time he logs
- in. If you have many classes (each class in its own directory),
- this configuration will affect all classes.
