  103. The series name, "DosEA," is a play on words which means
  104. a dossier on DOS.

  106. But, what is it?
  107.  
  108. Specifically, DosEA is a series of hypertext programs
  109. which explain DOS.  The series, so far, consists of . . .

  112.   DosEA 2 -- What is DOS?
  113.   DosEA 3 -- 10 Easy Commands
  114.   DosEA 4 -- Find That Command!

  116. More programs are under development.

  118. A key element in the presentation of the DosEA series is
  119. hypertext.  Once you get the idea behind hypertext, you
  120. can read and comprehend material extremely fast.
  121. Hypertext lets you select just what you want to read.  If
  122. you understand what you are reading, just keep at it.
  123. Otherwise, the hypertext leads you immediately to further
  124. explanations.

  126. Understanding hypertext is so crucial to the DosEA series,
  127. that the first program, "For Absolute Beginners," is all
  128. about how to use hypertext.  Even though the DosEA series
  129. is about DOS, the first program isn't about DOS, at all.
  130. Rather, it's about using hypertext.

  132. This second program in the series, "What is DOS?", then
  133. uses hypertext to introduce DOS.  The succeeding programs
  134. also use hypertext to explain further details about DOS.

  147. DOS.  It is for people who need to use personal computers,
  148. but do not have the time to get a degree in Computer

  180. "DosEA 2 -- What is DOS?" is an MS-DOS tutorial written
  181. in hypertext.  Simply stated, hypertext is one of the
  182. easiest ways to read and learn new information.  Here are
  183. some reasons why:
  184.  
  185. >  It has chapters like a regular book, so the reader has
  186. a feeling for "beginning," "middle," and "end."
  187.  
  188. >  It has an index which can be accessed at the press of a
  189. single key.
  190.  
  191. >  It has "hyperwords," which are highlighted words in the
  192. text.  If you come across a highlighted word and you know
  193. what it means, just keep reading; otherwise, select it
  194. like a menu item and immediately get more information.
  195.  
  196. Some of the DosEA programs have hands-on practice
  197. for MS-DOS commands.  The hypertext explains a command.
  198. Then, the computer demonstrates it.  Next, the user tries
  199. it.  The computer double checks the effort and, if a
  200. command is not entered correctly after three tries, the
  201. computer shows how it is done.

  203. How often have you read a computer book which used
  204. technical lingo you did not understand?  How frustrated
  205. have you become digging in vague indexes and flipping
  206. through pages?
  207.  
  208. DosEA solves that.
  209.  
  210. If you are reading DosEA and come across a highlighted
  211. technical word you do not understand, all you have to do
  212. is place the cursor on the word and press <ENTER>.  The
  213. computer will immediately display a detailed explanation.

  215. To go back, just press <ESC>, and you do not even lose
  216. your place.

  291. The program filters your commands before issuing
  292. them to MS-DOS.

  294. If an exercise says enter "DIR" and you enter "TYPE,"
  295. even though "TYPE" is a legal command, you will get
  296. an error message.

  298. Since this program is written for beginners, this
  299. prevents anyone from mistakenly entering a damaging
  300. command.
