  86. Welcome to "DosEA 1 -- For Absolute Beginners."

  93. The series name, "DosEA," is a play on words which means
  94. a dossier on DOS.

  96. But, what is it?
  97.  
  98. Specifically, DosEA is a series of hypertext programs
  99. which explain DOS.  The series, so far, consists of . . .

  103.   DosEA 3 -- 10 Easy Commands
  104.   DosEA 4 -- Find That Command!

  106. More programs are under development.

  108. A key element in the presentation of the DosEA series is
  109. hypertext.  Once you get the idea behind hypertext, you
  110. can read and comprehend material extremely fast.
  111. Hypertext lets you select just what you want to read.  If
  112. you understand what you are reading, just keep at it.
  113. Otherwise, the hypertext leads you immediately to further
  114. explanations.

  116. Understanding hypertext is so crucial to the DosEA series,
  117. that the first program, "For Absolute Beginners," is all
  118. about how to use hypertext.  Even though the DosEA series
  119. is about DOS, the first program isn't about DOS, at all.
  120. Rather, it's about using hypertext.

  122. The second program in the series, "What is DOS?", then
  123. uses hypertext to introduce DOS.  The succeeding programs
  124. also use hypertext to explain further details about DOS.

  170. "DosEA 1 -- For Absolute Beginners" is a hyperbook which
  171. introduces hypertext.  Odds are, you have never seen a
  172. hyperbook before.  Simply stated, it is one of the easiest
  173. ways to read and learn new information.  Here are some
  174. reasons why:
  175.  
  176. >  It has chapters like a regular book, so the reader has
  177. a feeling for "beginning," "middle," and "end."
  178.  
  179. >  It has an index which can be accessed at the press of a
  180. single key.
  181.  
  182. >  It has "hyperwords," which are highlighted words in the
  183. text.  If you come across a highlighted word and you know
  184. what it means, just keep reading; otherwise, select it
  185. like a menu item and immediately get more information.
  186.  
  187. "DosEA 1 -- For Absolute Beginners" introduces these
  188. features and explains how to use them.  Some of the other
  189. DosEA programs use these features to explain DOS.
  190.  
  191. Some of the other DosEA programs have hands-on practice
  192. for MS-DOS commands.  The hypertext explains a command.
  193. Then, the computer demonstrates it.  Next, the user tries
  194. it.  The computer double checks the effort and, if a
  195. command is not entered correctly after three tries, the
  196. computer shows how it is done.

  198. How often have you read a computer book which used
  199. technical lingo you did not understand?  How frustrated
  200. have you become digging in vague indexes and flipping
  201. through pages?
  202.  
  203. DosEA solves that.
  204.  
  205. If you are reading DosEA and come across a highlighted
  206. technical word you do not understand, all you have to do
  207. is place the cursor on the word and press <ENTER>.  The
  208. computer will immediately display a detailed explanation.

  210. To go back, just press <ESC>, and you do not even lose
  211. your place.

  213. But, why read about it, here?  Why not learn about
  214. hypertext with hypertext?  The DosEA 1 program is written
  215. like a hyperbook to illustrate what a hyperbook is.
