- The basic idea was very nice. You made a stock series of boards,
- (interrupt handler, bus receiver, bus transmitter,) along with
- boards that functioned as 16-bit registers, counters, etc.)

- You then could quickly make up any computer or interface by using
- enough of these modules in backplane that was wire-wrapped under
- computer control.

- The classic PDP-8 was constructed this way.

- We still are running a 20-year old mag-tape interface, and the only
- problem we had was when a leak in the roof flooded the unit, and we
- had to take all the boards out, clean off the junk (to prevent electro-
- lytic corrosion from the rainwater and the tar from the roof,) clean
- off the backplane, and put back together.
