  22. I'm sure everyone on the net has a story like this; most people have at
  23. some time been disappointed by product quality. These stories however
  24. are not in themselves a good guide for the prospective buyer. Failure rates
  25. can only be measured given a reasonable sample size.

  27. Manufacturing quality has improved a lot in the last 10 to 15 years; as a
  28. result it is less of a differentiator today. For example VW traded in the UK
  29. almost exclusively on perceived quality. They kept their prices high, and
  30. made no attempt to make the product "desirable" through colour choice or
  31. features.

  33. Other manufacturers attempting to break this sales "monopoly" were forced to
  34. improve their own standards. Today the VW Golf is no longer the best seller;
  35. notice how VW have suddenly discovered pretty colours and are willing to fit
  36. sunroofs to their cars!

  38. Most peoples idea of quality is coloured by advertising and received wisdom.
  39. A friend of mine bought a VW, it was so unreliable that after 20 months he
  40. swapped it for a Sierra.

  42. His experience did nothing to deter me from buying a Golf. I reasoned that he
  43. was just unlucky. If he had been unlucky with the Sierra I suspect I (and many
  44. others) would have added that to my personal list of reasons not to buy a Ford!

  46. BTW I bought a Renault 19 after my VW, the 19 was delivered with zero defects
  47. and ran without fault for 4 years/48000 miles. It was so good that I've just
  48. bought a Clio.
