- I think the reason for using hash (#) is because on most UK keyboards the
- pound symbol is legended on the hash key. I doubt if any of today's computer
- users know anything about ASCII, let alone 7 vs. 8 bit - only joking!.

- The ISO standard code for UK currency is GBP (eg. used on airline tickets).

- However I believe that the currency symbol we use is now out of date. The
- flouncy L was OK when we had Lsd; now our pennies are abbr. p. The pound
- should be abbr. P. This gives:
