- 25 july 1895. in an old folio of _hamlet_. he had staged a
- coup and hanged claudius from a high precipice overlooking the
- skagerrak. gunpowder had been invented and an invasion of
- poland was planned. we burned the entire shelf, but i am not
- confident the contagion was contained.
-
- 3 june 1895. my suspicions confirmed. an alert student found
- him in one copy of the new american thriller, melville's
- "moby-dick." on the second floor of the library, no less!
- ahab fed to the sharks and the pequod turned malay pirate.
- hideous. we had no choice but to incinerate the whole
- bookcase, except for a rare and valuable volume of hogarth
- plates, which, cognizant of the incubation period, we kept _en
- quarantine_.
-
- 4 june. the hogarth is ruined. angels and devils and vile
- pornography. one plate has mccowell's swarthy visage caught
- square face-on, reaping in native dress amidst a field of
- straw. an unwary flagrante. bertins, in chemistry, rigged up
- a sealed display case with an inert gas, which he promises will
- halt the transmission. i am not confident but accept his
- solution; we save the one plate, and burn the rest.
-
- 5 june. bertins finds an infestation of paracelsus in the
- chromatography treatise he has been working on. it is clear
- who is to blame. one of the fume hoods in which he prepared
- the encased plate, apparently, is broken. disconcerting news.
-
- 12 june. nothing more yet. have we been saved?
-
- 17 june. no sign of infection.
-
- 20 june. disaster! the library of the sciences is entirely
- infested. on our theories of mccowell's origin we had
- concentrated on the humanities. bertins' attack should have
- been the clue. every volume is now shot through and through
- with the most appalling of lies, and must be discarded. this
- is a tremendous blow to the college.
-
- 22 june. the same fate has befallen the main library. i am
- at a loss to explain the new and sudden onset of the contagion,
- and at once resign.
-
-
- 12 april 1896. i take a day off to watch the demolition. the
- new owners intend, apparently, to construct a textile mill.
- hopefully their efforts will meet with greater success. as the
- men move in with sledgehammers and the bricks tumble and crash I
- search for some clue to the calamity, half expecting a miracle,
- but none comes.
