  12. 25 july 1895.  in an old folio of _hamlet_.  he had staged a
  13. coup and hanged claudius from a high precipice overlooking the
  14. skagerrak.  gunpowder had been invented and an invasion of
  15. poland was planned.  we burned the entire shelf, but i am not
  16. confident the contagion was contained.

  18. 3 june 1895.  my suspicions confirmed.  an alert student found
  19. him in one copy of the new american thriller, melville's
  20. "moby-dick."  on the second floor of the library, no less!
  21. ahab fed to the sharks and the pequod turned malay pirate.
  22. hideous.  we had no choice but to incinerate the whole
  23. bookcase, except for a rare and valuable volume of hogarth
  24. plates, which, cognizant of the incubation period, we kept _en
  25. quarantine_.

  27. 4 june.  the hogarth is ruined.  angels and devils and vile
  28. pornography.  one plate has mccowell's swarthy visage caught
  29. square face-on, reaping in native dress amidst a field of
  30. straw.  an unwary flagrante.  bertins, in chemistry, rigged up
  31. a sealed display case with an inert gas, which he promises will
  32. halt the transmission.  i am not confident but accept his
  33. solution; we save the one plate, and burn the rest.

  35. 5 june.  bertins finds an infestation of paracelsus in the
  36. chromatography treatise he has been working on.  it is clear
  37. who is to blame.  one of the fume hoods in which he prepared
  38. the encased plate, apparently, is broken.  disconcerting news.

  40. 12 june.  nothing more yet.  have we been saved?

  42. 17 june.  no sign of infection.

  44. 20 june.  disaster!  the library of the sciences is entirely
  45. infested.  on our theories of mccowell's origin we had
  46. concentrated on the humanities.  bertins' attack should have
  47. been the clue.  every volume is now shot through and through
  48. with the most appalling of lies, and must be discarded.  this
  49. is a tremendous blow to the college.

  51. 22 june.  the same fate has befallen the main library.  i am
  52. at a loss to explain the new and sudden onset of the contagion,
  53. and at once resign.

  56. 12 april 1896.  i take a day off to watch the demolition.  the
  57. new owners intend, apparently, to construct a textile mill.
  58. hopefully their efforts will meet with greater success.  as the
  59. men move in with sledgehammers and the bricks tumble and crash I
  60. search for some clue to the calamity, half expecting a miracle,
  61. but none comes.
