- Subject: Why talk.bizarre needs *PLONK* (all newbie articles)
-
-
- At the January Working Group meeting, consensus was reached regarding the
- absence of any need for an *PLONK* (all articles from this newbie) function in
- talk.bizarre. (Note: this function is equivalent to that performed by the *PLONK*
- message in talk.bizarre.) The agreement was based on the idea that a series of
- properly formed *PLONK* (one article) operations can produce the same effect as
- an *PLONK* (all newbie articles) function. (*PLONK* (one article) is equivalent to
- *PLONK* TAG.)
-
- I believe that an appropriate use DOES exist for the *PLONK* (all newbie
- articles) function. The use occurs during newbie crash/reboot sequences.
- In such cases, the newbie lacks sufficient information to construct well
- formed *PLONK* (one article) operations. In fact, the newbie does not know how
- many *PLONK* (one article) operations are needed.
-
- In the absence of an *PLONK* (all newbie articles) function, the newbie
- engaged in a crash/reboot sequence must use one of the "bigger hammer" func-
- tions, such as CLEAR ARTICLE SET (equivalent to CLEAR QUEUE) or TARGET DEVICE
- RESET (equivalent to BUST DEVICE RESET). These functions have consequences
- very much beyond the actual needs of the newbie's crash/reboot sequence.
- Using these functions in multi-newbie environments, will result in a
- crash/reboot sequence on one newbie producing unnecessary lost-article
- recovery activities on all other newbies connected to the target.
-
- With this in mind, I propose the following list of functions having article
- killing capabilities and appropriate uses of each function:
-
- *PLONK* (one article) User requested termination of an operation.
- Newbie controlled recovery from bounded software
- failures.
-
- *PLONK* (all newbie Recovery during an newbie crash/reboot sequence.
- articles)
