  11. I was willing to try to accept the culture. I tried to accept the 
  12. culture. The culture was not interested in my acceptance or 
  13. rejection but rather in consumption -- not the mundane crassness of 
  14. conspicuous consumption, which I avoided simply by staying out of malls, 
  15. but the hidden, subterranean, whisper-quiet consumption of raw
  16. materials for which no credible replacement has been set forward.
  17. A sound which can be readily ignored. A white noise. Loud as
  18. all hell if you hear it, loud like the air rushing out of a
  19. pinhole puncture in the walls of a spacecraft.

  21. The culture, I couldn't help noticing, was intent on consuming all 
  22. available resources and, ultimately, itself. I am willing to consider 
  23. alternatives.
