- Today's headline in the UCB paper:
-
- "Patent Attorney Claims Machine Keeps Severed Heads Alive"
-
- Complete with diagram. The guy's serious. "Fleming holds degrees in law and
- engineering and received a patent for his "Discorporation" machine in May 1987.
- Fleming says the machine, which he has not built yet, would be "about the size
- of a desk" with a head mounted in the middle, wrapped in a padded column. The
- head would be kept alive by a heart-lung machine, an artificial kidney, and
- other basic devices. "It could think, remember, see, listen, and even
- talk...there are aspects of this that are genuinely disturbing [oh REALLY, how
- perceptive]." ...Similar experiments have been performed in the past. In 1971
- Dr. Robert White kept half a dozen Rhesus monkey heads alive for 36 hours.
- ...Fleming says it would be dangerous in the hands of the wrong people. "If
- dictators like Joseph Stain got a hold of this, they'd be able to hang on
- forever." Other issues that Fleming worries about are: Is the Soviet Union
- working on this project? Would the head still be married ? "I don't want to
- be responsible for what can happen," Fleming said. ...Officials at the
- Pentagon denied any knowledge of the machine or an intention to use the
- technology for military purposes [surrre]."
-
- For further details check out "If We Can Keep a Severed Head Alive..." by
- Chet Fleming, Polinym Press, St. Louis, 461 pp, $12.95.
-
- (He worries about Soviets working on this and he publishes a BOOK about it?)
-
- (What a concept for a band...lead singer a REAL severed head...)
-
- (and what do you think, WOULD the head still be married??? burning question
- of the 90's...)
