  22. I do not have pierced ears.  I never wear jewellery of any type.  I have a
  23. matt black Casio wristwatch, and matt black Italian-designed frames on my
  24. glasses; apart from my clothes, that's it.

  26. For Christmas, Helen bought me some moderately expensive perfume.  (Of
  27. course, I'm not supposed to refer to it that way because it doesn't sound
  28. macho, but let's be honest, it's perfume.)  I didn't think much of the idea;
  29. I don't really want to smell of anything except soap and deo-perspirant.

  31. Eventually I decided it was a sort of territorial marker, like the way cats
  32. rub themselves against you to mark you with their scent, and I'm getting used
  33. to the idea.

  35. I still don't like the idea of having needles shoved through my ears.  It
  36. took quite a while for Helen to convince me that it didn't hurt to put her
  37. earrings in.
