  29. I feel that I must respond to what I feel is a misleading and perhaps
  30. defamatory characterization of Gaelic-L.  I belong to that list as
  31. well as to Roots-L and several others.  All of us who spend time on
  32. the Net know that Lists exist for specific purposes, and that these
  33. purposes are usually clearly stated in material sent to list members
  34. at sign-up.
  35. When I saw Rick's original message to Gaelic-L, I was not at all
  36. offended, but didn't answer since I did not know the answer to his
  37. question.  There were two responses.  The first did, in fact remind
  38. list members of the language-learning purpose for the list in what I
  39. thought was entirely appropriate and inoffensive language, but did not
  40. `royally flame' the questioner.  The second response was, in fact, a
  41. defense of Rick's question since it involved the derivation of names
  42. and not origins of families.  This second may have been from Rick (I
  43. can't recall right now).
  44. In any case, I do not think a "warning" is necessary in this
  45. particular case.  I further think it necessary to be cautious before
  46. sending a message which could be construed as derogatory to the whole
  47. list publically.
