- Cliff Manis picked on a disk at a developers meeting he was at. The disk
- was free and given to everyone at the meeting. The disk contains a draft
- version of Gedcom 5.2 specifications, a library for accessing gedcom files
- including source (5.1 compatible?), and some example gedcom files. Cliff
- converted the disk into a tar file and sent me a copy which is now available
- via anonymous ftp or listserv. My only warning is that I have not tried the
- software myself nor am I responsible for it or maintaining it. Also the
- ASCII version of the specifications was formatted in 84 columns instead of
- 80, so if it wraps around on the screen or the printer...
-
- To retrieve the tar file via anonymous ftp, connect with ftp to
- hoth.stsci.edu (130.167.1.163), and login as anonymous and give your
- email address as the password. You want to cd into the lines directory
- and get the file gedstd52.tar.Z. The file is a compressed tar file so
- remember to transfer it in binary mode.
-
- For you non-internet unix users, you can retrieve a uuencoded compressed
- tar file by sending the message "get lines/parts gedstd5.2.tar.Z" to
- lines@stsci.edu. Remember this should go in the body of the message
- rather than the subject line. You should get eight messages which you can strip
- the mail headers off of, piece together, and run through uudecode, uncompress,
- and tar to get the files.
-
- The directory/archive in which this file resides is normally used to
- provide information for LifeLines users, so anything else you see in this
- directory is probably not useful unless you use LifeLines. The files in
- the pub directory (not available via listserv at present) are related to
- system and software support issues on Sun systems for support of the
- STScI (Space Telescope Science Institute) data and products and is probably
- not useful to most of you.
-
- For you non-unix users who are interested, send mail to fred@stsci.edu
- and tell me if you are interested in the just the specs or all of it, and
- let me know what related utilities you have available (arc, zoo, uudecode,
- mail, ftp), and we can arrange something.
-
- Also Cliff sent me a Word Perfect version of the standards document, I
- have extracted it, but don't have Word Perfect available. If you want this
- send me mail (fred@stsci.edu) and let me know if you want can handle either
- a uuencoded arc or a uuencoded zoo file, and I will make it available.
-
- If any of you want Postscript or would be willing to convert the document
- to Postscript from the Word Perfect document, please let me know.
