- BACKGROUND: The University of California's MELVYL System serves as the
- online union catalog for the 9 University of California campuses. It
- includes holdings from the California State Library and other affiliated
- California institutions. The search software and user interface are
- custom-designed in response to the needs of the UC community. The MELVYL
- System includes a growing number of commercial abstracting and indexing
- databases that are accessible via the MELVYL system user interface, and the
- system also provides access to a number of other library catalogs and
- databases via the Internet.

- STATEMENT OF DUTIES: As part of the MELVYL User Services group, the
- incumbent is a major participant in the planning and design of the MELVYL
- System user interface, and in delivering user services in support of the
- system. Responsibilities include the following:

- Analysis and Specification: Under minimal supervision, solicits input for
- design of system features, performs systems analysis of bibliographic
- requirements and/or usage data; prepares detailed specifications for MELVYL
- development programmers; tests system changes for quality, consistency, and
- reliability; advises and consults with other staff on various aspects of
- system design and enhancements; participates in setting priorities and
- scheduling the introduction of new features and changes.

- User Services: Performs user liaison functions including the following:
- participates in answering questions from the Helpline and user comments and
- makes suggestions for system improvements based on user feedback; serves as
- primary or backup liaison for Library Automation to various systemwide or
- campus groups; assists in organizing and presenting the annual MELVYL
- System Update for campus representatives; develops and presents training on
- system features as requested by campus libraries or other affiliated
- groups; communicates with campus library staff about planned maintenance or
- notifies them about unexpected problems.

- Documentation: Determines the need for online system documentation as a
- result of system changes or in response to user suggestions. Organizes
- online documentation system, and writes or reviews all help screens and
- error messages to insure consistency and clarity. Determines the need for
- periodic updates to the _MELVYL System Reference Manual_ and writes or
- reviews text. Determines the need for other print or online documentation
- and writes or reviews the contents. Writes regular column and special
- articles for the _DLA Bulletin_. Assists the editor of _The Mynd of the
- MELVYL System_ newsletter and coordinates its distribution.

- SKILLS, KNOWLEDGE, AND ABILITIES:

- Required: Education or equivalent experience appropriate for professional
- position in library public services and use of automated information
- retrieval systems. Excellent interpersonal, written and oral communication
- skills.

- Desired: M.L.S., knowledge of the MARC format, ability to work effectively
- with technical staff, library staff, and members of the university
- community, familiarity with the MELVYL system, knowledge or experience in
- user interface design, knowledge of trends in library automation,
- experience in writing documentation for automated systems.
