- As is the problem here we get to talk to many people who then become lost in
- the maze.
-
- Some time ago I spoke (via keyboard) with someone from this group about
- available muster rolls for the Hessians from the revolutionary war.
-
- At a local historical society meeting I had just spoken with the man in charge
- of the 'Barracks at Trenton'. He had told me that such lists don't exist.
-
- Well he was misinformed. Or maybe he meant a combined and total list. I don't
- know. Anyway, yesterday I was at the library of the Burlington County
- Community College looking for a copy of Clifford Smith's "Muster Rolls & POW
- Lists in American Archival Collections pertaining to German Mercenary
- Troops...", when I saw several books published by the Archival School of
- Marburg in Hessia. These were done in 1979 and entered into a computer system
- and then massaged with calculated dates when not available and includes a
- variety of information designed for genealogists. These books are for the
- entire Hessian force including the Waldeck regiment. The writing is in German.
-
- So here one would find Rall's troopers before they came over here and
- deserted, got shot, captured or went back. I didn't know these lists existed
- and thought they might be of use to someone here. I can check on any names if
- asked as the books are for reference only. There was extensive information
- about the Brunswick regiments there too. These seemed to have the most
- information as to town of origin, birth etc
-
- I have the Brunswick information here at home if anybody needs anything. Out
- of the 5723 Brunswick troopers 3015 did not return home for one reason or
- other. Many were captured and stayed, others simply deserted and stayed.
-
- As is usually the case the information I want about the Ansbach and Bayreuth
- Regiments is not available. I will have to see what is in the archives in
- Nuernberg. Sure would be nice to have a complete listing together somewhere.
-
- Now for the obligatory question:
-
- What was an 'anspecade' as far a rating or rank is concerned? The c has a
- little comma on its bottom. For some reason most of the ranks are given in
- French in our archival sources. There are other strange words like
- Vaguemaitre, Sellier, Marechal Compagnon, Charron Compagnon, Audnonier etc
