  14. Some comments were made several weeks ago about public access to
  15. records in Ohio.  Last evening I was brought up to date on one aspect:
  16. The Attorney General has appointed a task force on this subject; the
  17. task force is holding hearings in Columbus from anybody who is
  18. interested in the topic.  A report with recommendation is due to
  19. the Attorney General of Ohio in January 1994.  In the meantime two
  20. bills introducted into the legislature last session were not passed, but
  21. are being introduced this session, all towards making the records
  22. "more open" than in the past.  If any of you have written to any
  23. public office in Ohio and have been refused access to the records,
  24. I would appreciate direct e-mail to that effect.  Documentation would
  25. be advisable (send to Jim Freed, P. O. Box 864, Delaware, OH 43015).
  26. Genealogists are represented on the task force by at least two
  27. individuals, one (a member of our local genealogical society) who
  28. is representing the Ohio Genealogical Society, and another
  29. representing the Ohio DAR.  If you can send me personal stories
  30. documented with any important and verifiable copies of
  31. correspondence I will be happy to provide them to a member of
  32. the task force....will not promise any aspect of what will happen
  33. to them, but at least it may give them some ideas of "out-of-state"
  34. interest or unhappiness with Ohio "policy".  By the way, I "think"
  35. that the problem has not been so much with the current laws, but
  36. with the lack of enforcement or follow through with what laws
  37. are available.
