  14. I would like to do some comparative testing of the results from scanning
  15. old photographs.  I need help from the net as to what makes sense.

  21. However the issue for me right now is to see if I have a decent grasp of the
  22. parameters before asking a niece with access to scanners of different varieties
  23. to do a test for me.

  25. Parameter one... It would seem that one thing I will want to do is give her
  26. a large photo and a small one to test scanner resolution.

  28. Parameter two... It would seem I need some way  of figuring out if there is
  29. something about the software (as opposed to the scanner itself) that makes
  30. one or the other scanner work better.

  32. Parameter three... File size of the created image might be important. Storage
  33. is one consideration... but probably more importantly the better scanners with
  34. better resolution will probably be storing each photo as a larger file.

  36. Parameter four...  Which graphics standard is the photo stored in and which
  37. package would I wish to print it out with?  I am aware (only slightly) that
  38. the graphics arena has several different standards and translations among
  39. them generally lose stuff from the original file.

  41. There I've shown my ignorance and as I read the list ... these really don't
  42. seem to be parameters but just a list of things.  Can some of you help me
  43. through this?  My sense is that many of you in the biological sciences are way
  44. ahead of me in playing with images\graphics.  It has been my impression that
  45. it is the optical part of the scanners that inevitably falls short of making
  46. scanning a reasonable thing to do, but that the day will soon be here that
  47. we can pull together our family albums electronically.
