- I think that (1) sounds valid, but (2) is not as the topic you used was
- "post-divorce standard of living", and (2) specifies that she "stayed
- married".

- But oddly, many similar ifs are accepted uncritically as fact when
- the subject is sexism/racism. That is, rather than posing "what-if"
- questions, statements life -if not for racism/sexism <group-member>
- would have <success/etc>-. Well, maybe so, but maybe not. It does not
- necessarily follow.
