- The application for financial aid for college students is put through
- a computer and the computer spits out a number which determines whether
- or not you will get financial aid. Wouldn't it be nice to see what
- you're going to get before you send the application in? Wouldn't it be
- nice to try what-if values and see if you can increase your eligibility
- for financial aid? Wouldn't it be a surprise to find out that the cost
- of going to Harvard University is the same as going to State University?
-
- I am thinking of writing a shareware program that does these calculations.
- I have a Pascal version of it working right now but it's now pretty
- outdated due to the major changes in financial aid this year and the
- user-interface stinks because I only wanted numbers, not pretty screens
- at the time. I want to write an updated C version of it and market it
- as cheap ($5 registration fee) shareware.
-
- But I forsee a few problems:
-
- 1) Is the formula the government uses public domain or is it copyrighted?
- Would I be able to sell my program when I use their formula?
-
- 2) Am I repeating someone else's effort to provide cheap or free
- financial aid calculation programs to students? Basically, I want
- to know what are any existing packages that does the above.
